Boyfriends ex had herpes

I'm a middle aged gay male. Boyfriend recently told me his ex of three years who he broke up with a year ago had genital  herpes. He said his ex took acyclovir but not 100% of the time. He said his ex never had another outbreak following his original outbreak which was before they date.  they did not use condoms. He has since been tested for "everything" regularly but is unsure if that included a herpes blood test.. My boyfriend has never had any issues or symptoms... We have thus far only had protected sex but were considering starting unprotected sex soon. However, now I kind of want him to be tested for HSV-2 IgG beforehand. He is pretty ticked off and it has caused a rift between us. We are both afraid of the next step if it comes back positive..  Am I being unreasonable? I like him a lot but not sure if he's the one or anything.

You are not unreasonable at all. The reasonable thing to do is test for hsv in this situation. Is he sure his ex had hsv2? Genital hsv1 is very common as well

I know this post is from 5 years ago, but MY resolution would have been to say "You know what, how about we BOTH go ahead and get tested for EVERYthing under the sun together, that way neither of us have to live in fear."  All the best!
