Can thyroid medication affect HSV antibody test?

Hi,

I’ve been dealing with suspected HSV genital issues on and off for over a year now. I have had several IGG test, and also a western blot. All negative. I’ve had a low thyroid for years and have been on a low dose of synthroid for a long time. Could this medication affect the detection of HSV antibodies in my blood work?

Thyroid meds will have no impact on hsv testing. The only medication that would impact testing for HSV are antivirals. That’s because antivirals slow, delay or a sensually stop the production of antibodies. Thyroid medication does not impact the antibodies. If you’ve had an HS the Western blot at least 12 weeks out from your suspected exposure and have had no other sexual contact, you can take that as definitive. I know it’s really hard to believe in the testing. IgG tests Are prone to false negatives and false positives. The one thing about the Western blot though, is it looks for a whole group of antibodies and not just one. It’s the most accurate test you can get. If there was infection there, it would find it with 99.5% accuracy. Is there always a chance that the test will miss it? Sure. No test is fail safe. But the odds are in your favor that had there been anybody’s it would’ve found it. Chronic vaginal issues are unfortunately not uncommon. What makes them hard to deal with, aside from the uncomfortable feelings or pain or soreness, is that when they coincide with something like sexual activity, we assume that the sax is the cause. Therefore, we assume it’s an STD. Be confident in your testing and keep working with your doctor to find relief.

Yes there was a possibility a year ago that I could have been exposed. The person said they’ve been tested and that they are clean but who knows if that’s true. I have had suspected prodome. Back pain, feelings in the legs, but I could be imagining a lot of it with the stress of all of this. I have spots on my but the doctor said they are folliculitis and they look nothing like herpes. I’ve always dealt with butt breakouts since a teenager so I’m not sure.
