Can you get HSV-1 genital herpes from cold sores if you might already have it?

My wife (girlfriend of 6 years, wife of 3) has always had cold sores on her lips. Early on in her relationship, I kissed her and we had a mini-freakout. Never turned into anything, so I haven't stopped from kissing her even during an outbreak. We've always been careful during oral sex but last night we finally slipped up. I hadn't noticed her cold sore yet and she had "forgotten" about it, before we knew it, the deed was done. So my question is... if I have obviously been exposed to HSV-1 through kissing over the past 8 years and never exhibited symptoms, could I still get a cold sore on my genitals? My thinking is that I already have HSV-1 but don't exhibit symptoms like so many of those that have it. Would I suddenly start exhibiting symptoms just because my wife exposed her virus to my genitalia? Obviously, the answer may be just go get tested or wait for symptoms or signs, but this is a cry for help from my deepest anxieties.

Yes i would test now. That way if it comes back pisitive you know you've had it awhile. Just because she has it doesn't mean you do.
In what stage was her cold sore? Was it fresh or healing?

She said it appeared yesterday.  It should be noted that the sore was above her lip and not on her lips but I'm sure transmission is still possible.  I just don't understand how I wouldn't have already been exposed to the virus over the past 9 years and developed antibodies in the process.

My doctor is recommending that I make it through the incubation process and then test.  That testing now wouldn't help.
It would let you know if its recent or old also many dont get herpes that easy as have natural immune system to "help" prevent it as most at risk are babies and young children whose immune systems are not yet strong.
Are you saying the likelihood of me catching it from this instance is low?  Especially since I've been predisposed to the virus and built up antibodies?

No. That's not how it works.
Lets say you do have oral hsv1. Then it would be very rare to acquire it genitally later. I don't understand why your so upset. Your wife has hsv1 so sooner or later your the odds are you will probably get it.

I don't want to get genital HSV-1. She performed oral sex on me last night. I'm assuming I already have it though from previous exposure orally.

Your Dr is soooooo wrong. If you test now you have a base line. If you don't and test later and if it's positive you'll always wonder if you just got it or it's an older infection.

Besides testing, which I tentative appointment for, to the best of your knowledge, if I already have made contact with the virus and not exhibited symptoms in the past, would this incident suddenly cause symptoms to arise?
