Culture positive, blood test negative?

Okay so here is my situation. I had been having sex with this particular partner for over a month (not always protected, as I had been tested prior and everything was in the clear), and one day (a Sunday) we had sex, which was rough and he tore my vagina a little. After a couple day of discomfort, and painful urination (I called my OB and he said it was most likely from the ammonia touching the cut on my vagina causing me the pain, I thought "duh"), my vagina also began to get swollen. Now after speaking with my OB and following his instructions of putting aquaforum down there I felt that something had to be wrong. It was excruciating to urinated and my vagina was really swollen by Wednesday. I made an appointment and when went in they had me do a urine test and a very painful culture swab, along with blood work. Before any results came back my doc had too me that given my symptoms and what he saw, it looked like herpes. I immediately get upset, while listening to how it's so common especially among women. Mind you this isn't making me feel any better.
A few days later I get my results over the phone. My blood work came back fine, but the culture was positive. This I do not understand. I wasn't told if I had type 1 or 2. I told my partner and he insists he didn't give it to me and that I am either lying or now I may have infected him, even though I literally got tested for everything a month before we started having sex, and I hadn't been with anyone else. I just don't know what to do and am really confused. Any info or insight would be greatly appreciated.

since it's likely your partner also has this, why not just take the wait and see approach?  If you find recurrences to be too annoying to wait while they heal or you are having them frequently, you can always start suppressive therapy then.  totally up to you.

you and your partner should take the time to read the free herpes handbook we recommend in our read before posting post on the forum if you haven't already - full of helpful info!

The day of my initial doctors visit when they took the culture sample (Thursday January 3) I was given a prescription for valacyclovir 1gm tablet twice a day for ten days. I have one more day left. And when I returned to the doctors office (Wednesday January 9) and they confirmed I have hsv2, I was given another prescription that I will pick up tomorrow (Saturday) for valacyclovir. My doctor said its up to me if I want to take the medication once a day to prevent outbreaks, or take it when I feel an outbreak coming on. Even though I have no idea what it is supposed to feel like before I get a full outbreak considering I have only had the one.

it's good that they typed the culture for you. odds are it came from your current partner if your igg testing was negative at the time of your lesion culture.

did they give you herpes antivirals? if so what and what dose for how long?

Thank you for your response. I called my doc office today and they confirmed it is HSV2. They did not test be for yeast or bacterial infections during my visit.
Should I go and get retested? If so, how long should I wait to get retested?

odds are that your partner has never had herpes igg blood testing to know his status. He should go this week and get full std testing done to see what his own status is. make sure he gets specifically tested for herpes with blood testing as well as covers his other bases.  You might also never been tested for herpes before this - you'll need to investigate and find out.

Give the clinic a call today and ask if they typed your culture to know if it's hsv1 or hsv2.  If they didn't type the culture, admonish them for not following CDC guidelines and ask them to please call the lab to see if they can add on a typing for faster answers.

did they also test you for yeast and bacterial infections vaginally when you were seen?
