HSV-1 and pregnancy

I am pregnant and in my 3rd trimester. I tested positive for HSV-1 after kissing a boyfriend around 10 years ago. I've never had any type of outbreak though. Recently, I was intimate with someone (including oral sex) and then realized they had some type of lesion on their mouth. It wasn't oozing and I almost didn't notice till later afterwards. They have no idea if they have herpes or not. I've been intimate with this person for years and have never seen anything on their genitalia to suspect it's actually type 2. My question is, assuming they have HSV-1, how concerned should I be for getting an outbreak in my genital area (this would be an initial outbreak since I've never had one) or do I have relative protection with my HSV-1? And, can Valtrex suppressive therapy help me if I start right now to keep from having any problems with the baby or would it not help since this is a different location/never had an initial outbreak?

Thanks for the information! It's confusing when considering all the variables and trying to figure it out online. :-)

Hi, if (and most probably) you have oral hsv1, it would not have any affect on the baby during birth. And those with long time herpes in one area would be basicly immune to contracting in another area, so yes having it oral would protect you from getting it genital. Just work close with your doctors about this.
