So a low positive still needs to be retested. The std co who sent us to lab corp seemed to agree I was in gray level. I read some place by grace that my numbers are false positive. Guess I gotta find out if igg is same as herpes select, from what I have heard they are the same. Just done at diff labs. WB seems to be what everyone is suggesting. Lots of lab corp low positive turned out to be negative with WB.
I don't know if there is a difference between Herpeselect and Capita, but you should assume you have a low positive.
A low positive is a value less than 3.5 on a Herpeselect test.
A false positive is a positive value when no infection actually exists.
Nearly all false positives involve values less than 3.5. About half low positives are actually false positives.
I do not think the test is so sophisticated as that. It could well be that there are fewer antibodies in your blood at that time or that for some reason there is not a strong reaction to the antigen in the test but a stronger reaction to the actual virus in your body. Note that IgG antibodies are just one of nearly 100 different immune system responses to HSV.
If you have the antibody the you have been infected, no question. There is no such thing as having IgG antibodies from exposure but no infection. False positives are caused by proteins apart from antibodies sticking to the testing antigen.
Also, if the WB turns out to be positive does the 1.8 range mean I have a few antibodies in me vs others who have break outs and a higher range? The antibody doesn't seem to mean you have the virus from my understanding the antibody only means at some point in your life you were exposed but fought it off. ???? Being a symptomatic my only concern is to one day give it to someone.
So what is the difference between herpe select and igg capita, if any? So a low positive and a false positive are 2 different things but both need confirmation? Thx
Depends on the level. Given your timing from last sexual episode to test and 1.18 reading I'd suggest there is a 75% or greater chance of a false positive.
I do note though that you did not have a Herpeselect test and this is the one the analysis of false positives is based on.
What's your thinking?
Do you think most false positives end up being negatives? Thx
The Westernblot is much more comprehensive and is more likely to sort out false positive issues than another commercial IgG test.
Westover Heights Clinic are I understand very helpful in the entire process and I believe locate a collection place for you.
Does the site you recommend know which labs to go to in Los Angeles who will send the blood out? I've already printed the form and saw that the cost is around $200.
I guess what I am asking...is the Select test more detailed than the IgG? Thx
Oh and the reason for the few week delay is to give your blood a chance to clear whatever might be causing a false positive.
You can certainly go for Westernblot now as you say. The only reason I mentioned the alternative is one of cost and convenience.
So do you think it's a waste/redundant to do the herpeselect in 3 weeks? Is there a reason for a 3 week delay being that there has been no recent interaction with the virus if ever? Thank you!!!!
The IgG test is subject to similar false positive issues and needs confirmation.
Most places that draw blood would be able to do this for you. Becoming a phone patient of the Westover Heights clinic would also give you all the insights on how to get the test. No other specific details to help you sorry.
Just realized you replied. Thank you. No, it was a IGG Captia (might be wrong in spelling.)
I know I can get a Herpeselect/Elisa through Qwest but was wondering if it makes sense to just skip that step due to the similarities in tests and do the WB test?
I printed out the form from their site and hope my dr. knows about this test and how to order it. Seems like the lab needs to overnight it to Washington but qwest no longer does the test so gotta figure out where to get the blood drawn...any suggestions in SFV? Thx
From what you describe, a false positive is a very large possibility. This was a Herpeselect test?
The best way to get a firm answer is to obtain the HSV Westernblot test. Have a look at the University of Washington website for details of how to obtain the test and consult your doctor with the details.
There is also a reasonable chance that if you wait a few weeks, the level will drop below 0.9 and be negative with a Herpeselct test or similar.
