How long is my finger contagious when infected with herpetic whitlow?

I had an outbreak at Thanksgiving.  I doubled up my valtrex for 5 days, but my finger still is red in two spots, and tender to the touch.  It looks as though there may be a small amount of fluid in it.  Everything I read says to keep lesions exposed to air, but the skin on my finger feels so sensitive.  Sometimes I hit it and it seems to even cause an outbreak.

Anyway, just an overall question---should I be covering it, is it still contagious, etc.?

Yes, I had a swab.  It's confirmed.

You should try  to stick to one post because now we have to ask the question again if you had a swab of the finger to confirm whitlow as we dont have time to go back and re read past replies.
