How to protect against Herpes

I am a 29 year old woman. My grandmother and my mother both had herpes on the skin. As far as I know none of them had any genital or oral herpes. Considering I never had any kind of sexual activity, what are my chances of having herpes of either form. And how did my mother and grandmother had herpes on their skin (mother on hands and grandmother on back)? Pls explain how does herpes transmit and what precautions to take.

There are no more practical measures but to avoid contact with sores.

Without sexual activity, HSV2 is pretty much impossible to have.

HSV1 is very common and you may have it even if you do not know it.

Your mother's hand sores were probably not herpes at all. Your grandmother's back sores may have been shingles, which is the chicken pox virus and not the same as HSV1 or HSV2.
