Is there any reason to retest for HSV 2

I was tested in 2011 for HSV 2 after seeing a cold sore on my boyfriend's lip that didn't look like a normal cold sore.  In the 9 months prior to the sighting I had 3 or 4 instances where I had itching in my genital area that lasted a couple of days each time. I didn't visually see anything and treated as a yeast infection.  But after I saw the sore on my boyfriend's lip, the next time I had the itching I went to see my Dr.  By visual inspection, he confirmed that he believed it to be Herpes.  I had one lesion.  I had an IGG blood test.  The results were....HSV2 IGG - 4.37..... HSV1 IGG -  .44

If I'm reading it right, that's definitely positive for 2 and negative for 1.  Which does confuse me a little, because I do remember getting a few cold sores when I was a child.  I would expect that I would be positive for 1 also.

My ex boyfriend was subsequently tested after I came up positive for HSV2.  His test results were positive for HSV2 and negative for 1.

the first couple of years I've had the itching recurrence every couple of months, in only the one spot. The irritation has been very slight, and because it hasn't been severe, I have not taken any medication to control outbreaks. Also, I have not had any symptoms in the last 6 months since I have changed my diet to exclude most sugar, wheat and dairy.

However, my current boyfriend would like me to go on suppression medicine to reduce the risk of transmission and I have agreed to do that even though I am anti-drug unless absolutely necessary.  I guess I'm looking for an excuse not to take the Acyclovir or Valtrex, but is there any reason to get retested or taking a different kind of test?  Is it possible that there was a false positive?

Thank you for your input :)

Thanks Fleetwood....and I agree with you, that it is reasonable for my boyfriend to request it.  It is the very least I can do for him. I am very grateful that he is willing to take a chance with me although nervous that he will contract Herpes whether I use the drugs or not.  What I have read on here, it looks like the odds are cut in half when I take the daily suppression dose.  I am going to see my dr. today to get the prescription.

Your symptoms, blood test result and an ex partner's result all point to you having HSV2. There would be only a small chance that you do not have the virus.

Sometimes HSV1 testing can miss the infection. Equally what you thought were cold sores as a youngster could have been impetigo?

At the start of a relationship, I do not consider it unreasonable for a HSV free to person to request antivirals be used.
