Mistaken Pap Result

I had a pap smear last summer at planned parenthood and the result came back that I had abnormal cells with a sub-finding that it was possible that I had Herpes 2. I went in for a follow up appointment 6 month later. I had another abnormal cells so I went in for a colopscopy and found out I had HPV. The gynecologist said that it should have shown up on my pap smears. I have never had a herpes outbreak or lesions of any kind. Is it possible that the sub-finding was wrong and it was really just caused by HPV?

I'm a bit confused as to how you were diagnosed with herpes from a pap smear. Ask your doctor whether he swabbed your genitals for HSV. If he did not, then he does not know whether your HSV is genital.

The blood test would not have determined the site of your HSV infection, only that you have antibodies to the virus, which means it could be either above or below the waist (or possibly, but less commonly, both).

my pap smear came back suggesting uncertainty of cells possibly associated with herpes.  I had an igg blood test and hsv 1 igg 4.98 and hsv 2 igg of 0.91.  My dr said i have genital hsv1.  Ive never had any symptoms and never had an outbreak.  I've been with the same person for 2 1/2 years and he has no symptoms.  I've also had cold sores before I ever even had sex.  Could my pap be wrong??

you need to follow up on this with a type specific herpes igg blood test to see what your status is.

herpes won't show up on pap tests unless you have an active lesion on your cervix at the time you have the pap test which doesn't happen very often at all.
