Postive, Then Negative Test Result - Perhaps False Positive?

About a month ago I had protected sex with a new partner and about two weeks later decided to get tested for STDs (including the Herpes HSV1 & HSV2).  My HSV1 test came out positive (as I already knew I had this strand of the virus since I was younger), but I was completely shocked to see that my HSV2 came back positive as well (with a +1.91 reading).  When I've had sex in the past it has been protected at all times and have been always checked for STDs right after sleeping with a new partner and have always come out negative on the HSV2 test.  I was devastated and cried the whole weekend.  My doctor suggested I re-take the test as it could have easily been a false positive.  The second reading came out positive once again for HSV1 but NEGATIVE for HSV2.  My question is, which reading should I go by? The first or the second?  My doctor suggests I take the tests once again a month from now to "break the tie" as she likes to call it, but I'm confused how a false positive could come from a HerpesSelect tests.  Has this happened before? Please advise.  Thank you.

http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Herpes/low-positives---confirmatory-results/show/1097724?personal_page_id=873762  is the link to a prior post/poll here where we discuss this and there are also some links worth checking out.

Your first + hsv2 result was well within the false positive range.  Your 2nd negative test, confirm this though since it's only been a month since the encounter, repeating your igg blood test for hsv2 at the 3 month mark is a good idea.

are you still with this partner for them to get tested and see what their own status is?

My doctor suggested I'd get tested again in a month, so in the meantime I'm waiting. I'm extremely scared considering that now I have what seems to like a yeast infection but from the research I've done, a YI and HSV have very similar symptoms. I will definitely make sure to ask him to get tested as well. Thank you.

wait until 3 momths post encounter or you'll just end up repeating the blood test again.

once you know your partners status, much easier to see if you even have to repeat your testing.
