Recurrent Herpes

I am female, 21, and have had HSV II for slightly over a year now. my partner is immune to herpes and over the time we've been together we've never used condoms except for when we got gonorrhea from swinging with another couple.(with condoms)

I have recurrent herpes and it is always accompanied with a smelly milky off white discharge. It is not very thick, sometimes there are white chunks, and watery.  when i had gonorrhea it was yellow. i have been tested for it after being treated and it is negative. my question is, is this common in women with HSV II? I have read many forums and some say yes some say no and i am very confused about this.

I am currently not on any suppressants, and my outbreaks occur at least once a month, and during stressful months twice, or before/during my period. the only time it had a 3 month break was when i was taking echinacea ce to zinc (http://www.blackmores.com.au/products/Detail.aspx?ProductID=1851) three times a day for a month.

would suppressants (acyclovir etc)  get rid of the discharge, is this common in HSV II sufferers or could it be something else like bacterial vaginosis?

While there are some folks who probably are truly "immune" to herpes, most folks aren't.  Just because your partner hasn't contracted herpes yet, doesn't mean they are immune to it by no means.  Have you and your partner discussed what precautions to take together?

Your discharge needs a proper evaluation from your provider. You should get tested for yeast and bacterial infections too.  Some women do get a discharge with their herpes but your description sounds like a vaginitis so it's worth a proper evaluation.

You are having monthly ob's. why put up with that?  Consider daily suppressive therapy with one of the herpes antivirals and also follow up with testing for vaginitis. If you have bv or something triggering your herpes, treat that and you might have less ob's too .

He's been to a doctor, done the bloodwork and it all came back negative for both HSV I and II. What precautions would be necessary, other than condoms? We do not use it as he has had a vasectomy.

So you are saying that vaginitis might trigger obs or vice versa? This might be veering off the topic of herpes here but prior to contracting HSV II i did get rather frequent bouts of vaginitis, could that be the problem?

Also, what kind of discharge(color smell consistency etc) is experienced from women with herpes? I would like to know so i can differentiate between that and vaginitis.

Yes i will be getting meds as soon as i possibly can.

Thank you for your response Grace.

he's not immune to herpes just because he's testing negative at this time. You might want to consider using daily suppressive therapy to further protect him. it's up to the two of you. The free herpes handbook at www.westoverheights.com has loads more info on this for the two of you.

Yes vaginitis can mimick ob's as well as trigger them. Bv especially has been shown to increase the activity of herpes in general.

typically discharge with herpes is clear and only lasts as long as you have the ob. white chunks is usually indicative of vaginitis.
