Second genital hsv-1 OB Worse than first

About 2 months ago I contracted genital hsv-1 from unprotected oral sex. The first OB was aggravating but I kept telling myself that the second one wouldnt be as bad and I might not even have one. less than a week ago i started having another OB and this one is way worse having spread to the upper part of my thigh and as well as all over the initial area. From what i have read i got the impression the the second OB was supposed to be milder and that it wouldnt happen nearly as often as HSV-2. Now im nervous that I will have frequent OB's and dont know how to deal with this. I have a couple questions...
1) is valtrex equally effective against hsv-1 as it  is hsv-2? and should i consider starting on a daily dosage?
2) is it possible that i will have mutliple OB's and once my antibodies build up may not have another for a long time?
3) any advice on telling a possible GF about my problem
Any advice or help is useful....

did you start antivirals as soon as this recurrence started?

pick up a can of dermoplast spray ( the blue can not the red can for the genital area ). It's under $10 at most drugstores and a topical anesthetic. the advantage of it over creams is that you can spray it on and don't have to worry about trying to apply a messy cream.  it really helps with itching and pain.

Hsv1 genitally only sheds on average about 3% of days.  The odds of having sex on a day that it's actively shedding genitally are low in general.  If a partner already has hsv1 orally, the risk is too low to even worry about as long as you avoid sex anytime you have obvious genital symptoms going on.  No way to know if you also contracted hsv1 orally too at the same time unless you get obvious cold sores. the few studies we have on this show anywhere from 1/4 -2/3's of folks who contracted hsv1 genitally, also had it orally. unfortunately no easy or cheap way to determine if you also have it orally or not so just discuss that potential with any partners to see if they prefer you have protected oral sex or not too.

Yes i had the initial OB swab tested which came back positive for hsv-1. It all looks the same so i really dont think its anything else but i guess better safe then sorry. also how long does the second OB usually last because this is drivin me crazy. and is it true that because it is out of its place of preference that the virus is less likely to be transmitted through sexual activity? For your knowledge i always use condoms when having genital to genital contact and dont plan on having oral any time soon.
thank you

having a 2nd ob within 2 months of the initial infection is actually fairly common.  No reason to think this means you will have frequent recurrences.

as extensive as this sounds though I'd go and be seen to see if it's actually something else going on or not.  you could have a fungal infection or a bacterial skin infection going on too.

were you originally diagnosed through a lesion culture of your genital symptoms?

when it comes to talking to potential partners, just be open and honest about it. discuss all std's, condom use and birth control too. It's so much more than just your own hsv1 genital infection !
