Still not sure if its herpes...

I recently went to the gyno to get this bump on my vagina checked out. The bump was painful and then it kinda scabbed over. I have never had sex. But I have had cold sores on my lips and I was afraid I could have self-infected or something since the bump kinda followed the same pattern that I read  online about herpes. The gyno looked at it, and he used this stick-like thing and basically poked around the inside and outside of the vulva. He said he was doing it to rule out herpes. And after he examined me he said it was most likely an ingrown hair that got infected and that it scabbed over because I was scratching it. I asked him a few times if he was sure. since, I've had these painful bumps before. He said if I had herpes, I would have felt a sharp pain/burning sensation when poked on the scab. My problem is however, that I have looked everywhere and I didn't find that as a method of ruling out herpes. Plus, I don't understand why it would still hurt if it was herpes, since the bump had already scabbed over. Can anyone here help me out with this please?
