how long can HSV1 stay dormiant? I tested HSV1 pos but it is on my gland.
after second outbreak got tested. 2 outbreaks this year. same partner for 30 years
Hsv will stay in your body for the rest of your life. There may be breakout, so make sure to take care of it. Bless u and hope u have a healthy life.

You could have had this for years, or it could be a new infection if your partner has oral hsv1 and gives you oral sex, and has hsv1. About half the adult population has it, and 90% will never get any symptoms (cold sores, fever blisters), so they won't know they have it, but can still transmit it.
Your partner can get a type specific IgG herpes blood test, but it misses about 30% of hsv1 infections.
Even if your partner tests negative, you are unlikely to ever transmit this. Ghsv1 recurs a lot less frequently than ghsv2, and sheds a lot less, which results in a lot fewer transmissions. If your partner tests negative, all you should really do is avoid sex when you have an outbreak.
If your partner already has it, then you're fine, since you can't reinfect someone who has it.
If you both have it, you may never know if you had it prior and are just now getting symptoms, which is more common than you may think, or if it's a new infection from your partner. It shouldn't matter, really. It sounds like no one in your relationship was aware of this.

Thanks for responding. I've been accused if cheating :( Just a sad time here. The HSV1 was positive on my test several months ago but thats the first time I ever been checked for it. The small place is on my penis glad. This all started when I woke up from surgery and had the red spot. It took three weeks to go aw and I was taking antiviral drugs and creams.. Nothing worked but it finally left. No more problems til I had sergery again 5 months later. Woke up and red spot again. Took weeks to go away again. This is the first problem that I hadnt been put to sleep and developed it. The doctor said this could have been laying dormant in my body since I was in my late teens or early 20's and just now came to life visibly because of the surgery and my system being weakened. I have stayed up day and night for a week reading everything I can find about HSV. It seems to be going away now. I been on valacyclovir since Monday. I been using Nystatin cream but read I should be using Acyclovir cream. Got script for it an its over $200 with insurance :/
Also does anyone know if you can use the Acyclovir that is sold for animals?
Yes, your doctor is correct. You could have had it for years and years, or as I said before, your partner could have given it to you via oral sex. You may never know.
If you are taking Valtrex you don't need acyclovir cream. The cream won't do anything more than the Valtrex is.
Why are you using the Nystatin? That's an antifungal. Herpes is a virus, and nystatin won't do anything for it, and may make it worse.
It won't do much now, but if you get another sore, take the Valtrex, and you can use tea tree oil on it. Make sure it's 100% tea tree oil, and wet a cotton ball, then add only a couple of drops of the oil to the cotton ball, and dab it on the sore. You will really want to dilute it like that, or it will BURN LIKE FIRE. After awhile of using it - a long while - your skin may get used to it, and you may not need to dilute it, but really, don't take that chance at first. If you only get an outbreak once a year, you may always need to dilute it.
If you start getting more frequent outbreaks, you can take valtrex every day to help suppress it. They have a generic now that is far cheaper than it used to be.
What dose of Valtrex are you taking? The dose for recurrences is is 500 mg twice daily for 3 days, and you should start treatment at the first sign or symptom of an episode. After the first 3 days, the medication isn't doing much.
If you decide to take it every day, it's usually 500 mg once a day. If you have more than 9 outbreaks a year, it can be 1000 mg a day.
Acyclovir is often cheaper, but it's a twice a day dose. The acyclovir for animals is the same as for humans, but make sure the dose is correct - it's 400 mg twice a day for suppression, and for recurrences, it's 800 mg 3 times per day for 2 days. If you have an animal who needs this, don't deprive your animal of it. Call around and get prices from various pharmacies.
Don't stay up all night, either. Your body needs sleep. You had surgery, and your body is trying to fight the outbreak. Get some sleep. Show this to your partner, and then both of you get some good sleep.
Just breathe. It's going to be okay.
