Wow thanks. I did not know that. That makes me feel a bit better to know its common. Its unfortunate that I went through that if I didn't need to but whats done is done. They also told me that the cells were not precancerous. So I guess I shouldn't be too worried. Yea I'm scheduled for another pap in Sept. Hopefully that one will come back normal. Thank you so much for your help!

You should find out what the pap was. The new guidelines as of 2009 are that Paps are not supposed to be done on women under 21. Therefore HPV tests are not supposed to be done (like in your case, it was not done). The reason that they are not supposed to be done is that a lot of young women will test positive. They wanted to prevent colposcopies and biopsies in your age group. The reason that they test is to look for cancer and not HPV, and as there are virtually no cancers in your age group the decision was made not to do this testing. It is also known that HPV is common at your age and clears up and is usually a transient infection (goes away). Unfortunately you got caught in the area that was trying to be prevented and all it does is cause anxiety. I'm not sure what your Dr. told you but I presume he wants you to have a Pap in 6 to 12 months. I would wait for a normal pap and then try to get pregnant. This will clear up and it will not affect you becoming pregnant or your baby.

I have no idea what the diagnosis on my pap was. I suppose i could find out. Ive been having paps since i was 17, and this one came back abnormal so they did a colpo and biopsied a part of my cervix and found cells associated with HPV.  No i did not have an HPV test done and I am not currently pregnant but I am trying to conceive.

I have a few questions. Do you know what your Pap smear was? Was there a diagnosis such as ASCUS, LSIL, HSIL? I know this sounds confusing but it would be important to find out. I'm not sure why you had a Pap or a colposcopy. The current recommendation is not to do Paps before 21. Mildly abnormal Paps and HPV is common in women under 21 and it usually clears naturally on its own. Did you also have an HPV test done? Are you pregnant now or is this just a worry for the future?

I also had a colposcopy and thats when my doctor said i had abnormal cells associated with HPV. Does this mean i have HPV? and does this mean my fiance has it now also?

I have HPV and I have talked to my doctor about this, plus, I'm 32 weeks pregnant :) He said that it is very rare that a baby will contract HPV. The only chance that a baby will contract HPV from the mommy is through delivery (the baby gets what is like a strep infection in the throat). My doc said that in his 30 years of practice, he has never seen this happen. It will not affect your ability to get pregnant unless you have had tons of procedures where your cervix has a ton of scar tissue. I had 3 colposcopies done, and a LEEP procedure, and was still able to get pregnant :) Don't worry! Best wishes!
