pregnancy after LEEP

I was just informed by my Gyno that I have High grade dysplasia in my cervix.  I am really scared that it will affect my chances of getting pregnant.  Has anyone gotten pregnant soon after the LEEP procedure?

It sounds like your first abnormal was very mild and was probably ASCUS. Then they reflexed the specimen and you had an HPV positive result. This is a very common finding in women your age. This usually clears up in 6-12 months. The fact that you had an ectopic may have complicated everything. I’m not sure why it took your Dr. over a year to get you in for a colposcopy?? I would ask him why. Since you are seeing him today, not only would I get the results but I would ask for a referral for a second opinion. Some OB/Gyn’s are very good at doing colposcopy and others are not so good. Some labs are very good at interpreting the results and others are not. It never hurts to get a second opinion.

To be exact, my first abnormal pap was Feb/10.  This is also when the doctor discovered I had HPV.  I'm not sure what the level of abnormal the Pap was?.  The doctor only said there was abnormal cell growth that needed to be checked out.  With the ectopic (pregnancy was 5-6wks), I had immediate laparoscopic surgery at the hospital.  The surgeon was able to save both tubes, although he did said there was scar tissue he had to remove.  The colposcopy was performed by an OB/gyn on May/11, which was the earliest appointment my doctor was able to get for me.  He didn’t seem at all concerned this may be urgent.  Only just a few days ago, the OB/Gyn called me to say that it appears to be a severe case of dysplasia.  He said I will need the LEEP procedure and that the area infected is only about ‘as big as a thumb’.  He has made the appointment for the procedure for early august as he is aware I am trying to conceive.  I really, really appreciate the time you’ve taken to explain all this to me.  I will be seeing my doctor today and will be requesting to see the reports as you suggested.

I am not sure that I understand...
You had an abnormal Pap a year ago around May 2010 but you could not get a colposcopy until May 2011 (Do you know what level of abnormal your Pap was? And was that when you found out you had HPV when you had the Pap?). In the meantime you had an ectopic pregnancy (Jan). Did you not see an OB/GYN with the ectopic? Did you just have the ectopic and bleed? Did you have laparoscopic surgery for the ectopic? Do you still have both tubes? A year is long time to wait to have a colposcopy. Did an OB/Gyn do the colposcopy and do you have a copy of the pathology report. It would be important to get a copy of the Pap and Colposcopy reports. If you had yearly Paps and they were all normal prior to this abnormal, it is unusual to proceed to have severe dysplasia that quickly (not impossible, but unusual at your age). The term high grade dysplasia usually refers to a Pap result. There are different terms for colposcopy biopsies such as CIN l (low grade dysplasia), CIN ll (moderate dysplasia) and CIN lll (Severe Dysplasia). Sometimes it is hard for a pathologist to distinguish between CIN ll and CIN lll and a number of CIN ll resolves. You could also have some abnormal cells due to your recent tubal. Also pregnancy can make changes in your cervix that make the cells appear abnormal that resolve. I think I would try to get a second opinion before I had a LEEP. You can have children after a LEEP but I think I would make sure it was needed since you have had some prior complications. Don’t scared but it is important to understand all of this before you proceed. Good Luck.

I'm 28 years old, no kids yet, ectopic in january of this year and have been trying to get pregnant since.  I've only had one abnormal pap and it took almost a year to get an appointment for my colposcopy (May 17/11).  At that time I also found out I had HPV, but not sure which strand?  I got the results from the colposcopy just the other day and found out i have high grade dysplasia.

Yes, you can pregnant after a LEEP. Have you had a history of abnormal Paps? Did you have an HPV test? Did you have a colposcopy and what was the result? Are you under or over 30? It is important to understand what your tests mean.
