High Systolic Readings

Hi All,

I am a 26 year old male that has been struggling with high blood pressure for over a year now. In that time I  began exercising, eating better, and reducing salt from my diet. I've lost around 40 pounds since February of this year. My blood pressure has improved but not by what I was expecting. I used to have blood pressure averaging 135/85 but it ranged from 125/75 to 150/95 at times. Now I am usually around 135 on the systolic number and 80 or below on the diastolic number. I've had good improvement on my diastolic number. However I'm not happy with where my systolic number is. My systolic number is usually 130 to 140. I don't understand why, I eat virtually no salt in my diet. In fact I'm probably not getting enough salt in my diet. I really want to see my systolic number 125 or lower, but even under 130 consistently would be OK.

No matter what I do I can't seem to improve my systolic number. I am not on any blood pressure medications. I took Lisinopril for 2 weeks and then went to the ER for heart attack like symptoms. I had the full works of tests done which determined my heart was healthy but did not determine the cause of the symptoms. My doctor took me off Lisinopril and I haven't been taking medications since.

What is really confusing is the instability in my blood pressure readings. For example I could take my blood pressure at 130/80 and then 10 minutes later it will be 140/75 with no change in activity or posture. Then another 10 minutes later it might be 125/80.

Anyone struggling with something similar or have any advice? My blood pressure isn't awful, but at 26 years old I want to get it under control now so it doesn't worsen over my lifetime.

Hey!
I'm suffering from same situation as yours, my age is 21 and my blood pressure too fluctuates much, at morning it is like 125/75 while until evening it fluctuates 135/80 or sometimes 140/80.
Contact me so that we can discuss and have some sort of solution to it.

Salt seems to have little effect on mine. If I eat out sometimes it will affect the numbers by a few pts, other times it won't. Just depends. Mine is never below 120's...I'd say my average is 135/75. Sometimes mid day I can check it and it will be 140's my diastolic sometimes in the 80's but usually runs good other than my systolic pressure. I seem to get higher reading during winter months too

Mine varies from day to day and time of day. In the morning and late evening when I'm waking up or going to bed my systolic number is usually between 120 - 130 and my diastolic number is between 70 and 80. During the day it varies from 125/70 to 135/85 with occasional readings at 140/90. However ever once is a while I get a 140/70 or 140/80 reading. I would say on average my reading is 130/80 which isn't bad from what I understand. However I take my blood pressure 4-5 times a day so it may be high at times that I'm just not catching.

When you eat something salty do you notice an increase in your blood pressure? I've had a hit or miss experience. Sometimes my blood pressure will spike, other times it has little to no effect on my readings.

It's normal for blood pressure to fluctuate within minutes, mine does the same thing. It's even more relevant with hypertensive subjects. With my meds when resting mine is hardly ever over 140/90....one day it was 148/75 but that was just one time. What kind of readings do you get? Mines usually between 128/70-138-70

Saylor23, just out of curiosity what medications have you tired?

I was on Lisinopril for 2 weeks and it was very effective at lowering my blood pressure, but I had an allergic reaction to it which landed me in the ER for overnight observation.

I'm going to my doctor every three months and have been monitoring it regularly. I'm usually in the pre-hypertension zone with some spikes to borderline stage 1 hypertension 140/90 but its not going above that. My doctor doesn't feel I'm in any danger at this point which is why I'm not on any medication while I continue to lose weight through exercise and diet.

Really my main concern is the variance in readings. I'm not sure if its normal to experience blood pressure changes as I described or not.
