My BP is rising again. Do beets really help?

Hi,
I’m a 61 year old (Italian American) if that is significant, male. I’m 5-8 about 156 lbs and in pretty good shape for my age. I excercise regularly on a treadmill and stationary biking. About a year and a half ago I joined a gym and have been weight training 3-4 times per week. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure a few years ago. Since then I’ve been on 10mg of lisinopril and my BP has been under control. Also for a few years I have been taking daily cialis 5mg for well, you know.
Recently my BP is starting to rise again to readings like 147-97-ish, to around 160-95-ish.
I go to the doc for a check every 6 months and will now go back in 3 months.
A while ago I read some good things about beets and BP and have been consuming them regularly. I slacked off recently due to holidays and whatnot and was wondering if that it may have been why my BP started rising again.
I’m just wondering what to expect if those numbers are accurate and the being back on the beets is not helping. Raise in meds? Possibility of (gulp) stopping my cialis?
Thank you!

Hello and welcome to the forum.  Thanks so much for your question.  Do you monitor your blood pressure at home regularly and this is how you have this information that it is rising?  I think I'd bring this to your doctors attention now rather than waiting for 3 months.   There is evidence that beet juice when consumed daily can reduce blood pressure for some people. https://www.webmd.com/hypertension-high-blood-pressure/news/20121212/beetroot-juice-blood-pressure#1  So, that is worth giving a try, however, I'd still want your doctor to be aware of this. Medications can at times need dosage changes and switches.  That needs to be monitored.  How are you consuming the beets and at what quantity?

Thank you. As I said it was under control for a long time on 10mg of lisinopril. I was consuming beets in different ways, fresh organic, jarred and powder form from the vitamin shop, as long as I was getting some form I wasn't too concerned about how. I was back for my 6 month check as 3 months has not been needed and it was at 147-97. I just purchased a monitor after that visit in December due to the rise. I started to take the readings every few days and it was still up. I also purchased a bottle of beet juice to immediately get back on the beets and a bottle of powered from the vitamin shop just so I would have them when the juice ran out. Fast forward to Saturday night around 11PM and my readings were 126-76, 123,78, 123,76 and a pulse of 75. So I will keep up the beets and the readings and see what the next few weeks brings.
Thanks very much.
That's really great information for our readers regarding beets as long as members check with their own doctors about that.  Your readings you listed starting Saturday at 11 pm are all good.  You sound really great about looking after your health and I commend you for that!
Looking after my health yes, but also having an aversion to upping or adding to my meds and fear of removing the other one. Now if I can only lose a little bit of stubborn belly fat!
Thanks!
