Draining Tube

I had a partial hysterectomy on Dec 2nd and the draining tube was left in because they couldn't get it out.  They are now telling me it could be 3 months or so before it comes out.  Is this normal?  I think they may have stiched it in.  Wont scar tissue grow on it and prevent it from coming out?

HI, I've had a total hys in 2003 - they took out the 1 drain tube they had inserted prior to me leaving the hospital on day 4 - it was barely stitched in - just enough to keep in place.  It was a matter of nipping the stitch and pulling out tube - the small puncture hole closes very quickly.  Then, in 2004, I had another abdominal surgery in which the same thing occurred - the tube was removed before I left hospital (done at the Univ. of FL's Shands Teaching Hospital in Gainesville, FL - I think they knew what they were doing - suggest you get a 2nd opinion and fast!).  Lastly, another abdominal surgery in 2005 - same hospital - Shands - and this was most invasive and required 2 drain tubes - one on either side of my abdomen.  These I had to leave in for 2 weeks due to extensive work in my belly.  I had to drain them 2 times a day and watch carefully for any sign of infection in the fluid coming out or around the tube insertion site.  These tubes were also stitched in - not the disolvable kind - regular ones that need to be removed - they just hold the tube in place in case you move funny and accidently pull on it.  Also, as a point.....one Dr. told me that the tubes had to come out as soon as they thought I was healed enough for them to be removed as the body would continue to produce fluid, thus, requiring me to continue to empty the tubes.  So, the Dr. shouldn't be telling you that as long as you have drainage, you need the tube.  Best of luck to you and be your own advocate.  Please also watch for any sign of infection and seek help immediately if you even suspect anything strange - the tubes going right into your body/abdominal cavity are nothing to take lightly.  Again, best wishes sent your way!
