Postmenopausal spotting with closed uterus

When you have a closed uterus and a hysteroscopy could not penetrate into the uterus to test the cells of the thickened uterine liining, what are your options.  I had postmemopausal bleeding prior to this, and had a cone biopsy or leep, and a D&C about two and 1/2 years ago.  They did the D& C because I had a thick uterine lining and they thought fibroids, but discovered that they were actually on the outside.  I again had spotting, and had an ultrasound done several weeks ago.  I was told the lining was again very thick, and the cervix was practically nonexistant.  I went in for a hysterscopy and a D& C, but they were unable to get into the uterus to get cells for a diagnosis.  What are the options.  Is there any other way to test to see if it is cancer or something else.  I am 62, overweight, and have been postmenopausal for at least 7 years.

Thank you for the information.  I will definitely talk to the doctor about this.  I did have gallbladder surgery laproscopically, so I hope this will not cause me a problem.  What type of doctor should I go see?  A regular gynecologist who does hysterectomies, or a gynecologist that specializes in cancer?  I feel funny about that last one, because we do not really know what the problem is.  When I had the cone biopsy, this was done to address a ASCUS diagnosis on a pap smear.  It turns out he removed nearly all of the cervix.  Could they do the hysterectomy at the same time if they found a problem, or would they have to schedule a new surgery?

A diagnostic laproscopic surgery is when they put you under to sleep, and make four very small insions about 1/2 or so inch one on the very top of belly button, and three on abdomen..they insert steel rods that are hollow, they then use gas to distend the abdomen. and with the aid of computerised camera that is put into the steel rods in which ever spot they need at the current time they can visually see what is physically in the body...they also can take tissue out for biopsy ..they can even do a entire hysterectomy this way.

If you have any questions plz feel free to pm me...or post questions here.

good luck , and rest assured this is a simpler operation, they will be able to diagnois you and likely even take care of some problems with this surgery.

Hi Cherie, I'm  looking for a alternative because my uterus-mouth is grown over and the doctor could not go through it for a biopsie. Is diagnostic laproscopic surgery possible for my problem? My doctor wants to remove the whole uterus. I do not agree and find that solution a bit drastic! Hope you can give me advice. Piroska

Thanks for the advice.  I will talk to the doctor about it.  They could not get into the uterus to get cells to diagnose.  I will ask about a diagnostic lap.  I did not know about this.  I hope this helps.  It would at least tell me one way or the other if I have to worry or if I need a hysterectomy.

A diagnostic laproscopic procedure would be something for you to discuss with your dr..also there is no way that a needle biopsy or cone biopsy would not work if done during a lap.

Its common to have fibroids on the outside rest easy cause 99% are begnine.

Im sorry but my opinion of ultrasounds is low...here is why Im a average weight woman..I had ( I say about weight cause heavy women get even worse lack of results form ultrasounds)  anyways I had a cyst a large one on my ovary took me a year to get my dr to deal with it...many trips to er when it flared up and sent me into agony..sometimes they saw my effected ovary sometimes they could not find it. same with cyst and both were always there.

Did they do the Dand C? all the tissue scraped out would be cells available for biopsy..perhaps not to dx anything else.
