Dr didn’t change dirty gloves before catheter insertion

I had gone for a follow up visit for UTI resistant to bacteria. I went into bathroom to leave a urine sample. The floor was dirty.  I went back to exam room and PA said the ultrasound couldn’t be read so she needed to do a catheter.  I was surprised at this.  But she seemed in a hurry.  She had on gloves when putting my feet with shoes on into stirrups, but she did not change gloves before quickly inserting the catheter.  I was so shocked  but continue to ask myself why I didn’t say something.  Sick from infectious, nauseated from dirty bathroom, surprise cath, trying to understand why the ultrasound wasn’t functioning???  Now, I’m so upset about what infections could be on that dirty floor and now in my blood stream as she said it was difficult and felt like tears during the procedure that had never hurt before. I can’t eat or sleep worrying about what to do.  Confront and risk trying to find a doctor that will take a new Medicare patient?  Stay and hope someone on here can help

Also, it sounds like the ultrasound machine worked it just didn't show anything about your infection. Also,  you generally don't get a blood infection from a dirty catheter. You might get a urinary tract infection or skin infection first.

Hi and sorry you are having problems.  I am not a doctor, I am a microbiologist , but I can try to give you some advice. I think you have your terms mixed up though so I'm not sure what you are saying. Did the urine specimen not work and so they did a catheter to get more clean urine to test? Also, A regular urine specimen can get contaminated  by your skin. So then the PA took a catheter specimen. It was wrong if she/he didn't change gloves after touching the floor and then touching you. But I imagine that they cleaned the area off  with a disinfectant so the specimen is probably fine. I think when you said you have a UTI resistant to bacteria that you mean you have a UTI resistant to antibiotics right? You can get that from your own skin or from many places like from when you pass a stool sample. It sounds like the ultrasound machine wasn't working. So I think you need to talk to an a doctor to ask what exactly is going on. Did your urine culture come back positive with the resistant bacteria? If so they probably have many antibiotics to treat it despite it being resistant. What bacteria actually grew in the culture and what was it resistant to. Did they put you on an antibiotic?
