strep throat

Has anybody ever got strep an it turn into bronchitis? The doctors at the hospital worried me a lot when she said that if I don't get better in a week that my strep turned into bronchitis. Has this happen to anybody before?? Should I go into my doctors office tomorrow an have them do a swab?

Any type of infection in the throat can spread down the respiratory tract to the lungs.

It does not mean that this will happen, but your doctor is being cautious because you do already have asthma which is a lung disorder.

If you do start to feel tight in your chest with a bad cough and feeling unwell, then that may be a chest infection.

Keep warm and drink plenty of warm drinks.  Antiseptic throat lozenges will help to soothe your throat as will drinking hot lemon and honey.

Best wishes.

Hi Jessika20,
Well, usually you get bronchitis after a flu or when you get run down. I haven't seen it after a strep throat.  Sore throats can often be caused aby viruses and not strep. With a strep throat you usually get a high fever. Sometimes you can also get swollen lymph nodes under the neck. You don't always get pus (white spots on the tonsils or back of the throat) but you usually do.

Strep throat can become serious so they do have to watch you. Sometimes it does go away on its own. I would definitely get the swab done. There can be complications, although rare, of scarlet and rheumatic fever if not treated too. The doctor may be checking because of your asthma and also being extra careful because you are pregnant. So they may want to treat you to avoid the possible complications. but only if it is strep throat.

Bronchitis is usually caused by a virus or a bacteria such as one call Mycoplasma or other bacteria but not usually by the Streptococcus that causes strep throat.

If it is a virus you can gargle with warm salt water . I tsp of salt in a cup of warm water several times a day. But don't do this until you do the throat swab.
hope this helps.

I noticed the white spots when I woke up thats why I went in but she said they weren't swollen but they were extremely red an had minor spotting on them. Then she asked me if I smoke or anything which I don't due to being 7 months pregnant lol an she just said she is putting me on the meds an if it doesn't get better within a week that I need to go back in. Never did a swab and its like it doesn't hurt to swallow or anything just when I yawn an stretch my mouth it hurts. But she wants to keep an eye on me cause I have a cough an my asthma is acting up... I'm going to see if I can go in to my doctor tomorrow an see what she says. Cause I don't want to take any meds that I don't need.

She didnt swab? Uh yeah I would go in and get your throat swabbed. Did she say anything about about your tonsils (correct me if I spelled that wrong) being swollen or white?

I havent either. I really hope that medicine works fast for you. They thought I had bronchitis but ended up being just an upper respiratory infection.
