really IBS?

Hi all- first time ever posting in a forum. I'm a 26 year old typically very healthy female. I have recently been diagnosed with IBS but I'm unsure that's what's wrong with me. I have been suffering from diarrhea 12+ times a day for about 7 months now and I have ultimately lost over 15 lbs unintentionally which leaves me underweight. Furthermore, I have severe upper gi pain that is not suppressed by and OC antacids or the prescription PPI I am on. I suffer from on and off low grade fever, dry heaving attacks and unbearable pain. I am diagnosed with IBS and possibly an ulcer. It seems oddly coincidental that I would just happen to have both flare up at the same time. Any one else have this odd combo of ailments, or have my symptoms and receive a solid diagnosis? There is a history of cancer and crohn's in my family.

Hey Sue, sorry you're suffering...

have you taken gluten/dairy.. got super bland on the diet before? :S that sounds miserable...

also you.. *could* try a trial of steroids.. just a short duration just to see how you react (you might be have an allergic reaction to foods OR like you said chron's in the family...)

either way sorry to hear that :(

Hi, IBS is a diagnosis of exclusion, i.e. once all other diseases of the colon like colitis, infections, tumors etc. have been ruled out, then the diagnosis of IBS is made. So, it is difficult to tell if the symptoms are due to IBS. Certain infections like tuberculosis can cause an evening rise of temperature and diarrhea. This also causes a loss of appetite; as such this is accompanied by weight loss. So, record your temperatures, on a two hourly basis to detect an evening rise of temperature. Please check with your doctor to rule out this condition. Regards.

I should also mention that I had a clear colonoscopy which is great. However, the pain never really seemed to be lower- it's between my navel and rib cage often radiating to my back. The diarrhea is sticky and either black or grey and it burns. I tested negative for occult blood. Rarely with the dry heaving fits do I vomit, but when I do it is dark purple or greyish. I have been on different antispasmodics which didn't help and was on omeprazole but it took about 8 a day to ease any pain. I am currently on imipramine and pantoprazole but the imipramine only seems to help if I'm also on pantoprazole. I have forgotten to take my imipramine for a few days and still had a decrease in diarrhea on the pantoprazole- however missed a day on pantoprazole and had the diarrhea come back. It seems impossible to think a PPI would help diarrhea so I am feeling crazy.
