8mm kidney stone

My wife's general doctor had ordered a renal ultrasound for her yesterday. The results came out that there is evidence of a stone, of 8mm, located in the middle part of the renal sinus on her right kidney. The stone does not produce renal ecstasia.and  the kidney measures 10.8cmx5.2cmx5.2cm. She was given pain and pressure medications until she sees a urologist in a couple of days. My question is, if she would require a surgery or is there means of removing the stone without going the surgery.
