I was in the navy years back and was stationed in Naples, Italy. The Naval Hospital was small and did not have a urologist attached to it and I developed a kidney stone(s) while there. The first time it was managed by a general surgeon, pain management and lots of fluids. After the third evolution in as many months, they flew me to Germany to see Urologists at the Army Medical Center in Landsthul. Ultimately, after testing and imaging, it was decided that I was a good candidate for a basket extraction as they could see the stellate stone, not sure of location. Keep in mind, this was in 1983/1984 and I'm not sure how advanced the technology was at the time but I was given spinal anesthesia and they went to work. The staff and the physicians were great, very caring and I really have no complaints but evidently they were unable to retrieve the stone as I went back in the operating room three days in a row, each day with spinal anesthesia and signing a consent for the same basket extraction as the first procedure. Each time uneventful until the third time, when the effects of the light sedation drugs wore off (I think a bit of valium while I had the spinal) I noticed these metal wires coming out of my penis, which they told me were stints. Foley catheter and the works and urine in the bag looking like blood. I was an inpatient for about ten days, all the while passing blood clots, some the size of golf balls. One wonderful day all the tubes and stints were removed and I was told to hydrate well over the weekend, they would see me on Monday and I could return back to Naples Italy on Tuesday. Over the weekend, I was never without something to drink and spent most of the time in my barracks room watching tv and peeing non stop. They put me on a plane on Tuesday and just before the plane to off, I passed out in my seat and was taken by helicopter back to Landsthul where my hematocrit was 19%, evidently too low, back to surgery to repair a "bleeder" and then back on the plane the next day. Since that operation, I have always leaked urine upon exertion or heavy laughing. I saw a couple doctors since and they said it would subside. I was 23 then, I am now 55 and still have the incontinence problem. I've tried to live with it best I can but its a pain. Not sure what happened to cause the disorder, wondering if I should even pursue correction, but certainly don't understand why it is happening. Where do I go from here, is it worth the pursuit? Do you think it was the basket extractions three days in a row? Thank you for bearing with my long winded explanation but you have the wholw story. Joe
