My dad broke one arm and one wrist. He fell in the hospital. He is having surgery to fix that. I have been having ultrasounds on my kidneys since my dad has RCC. They found a small simple renal cyst in right kidney. Told me it was harmless. Not to worry about it. Hard not to worry since my dad has RCC. What is the chance this being misdiagnosed on ultrasound? Should I follow up? Are these cysts connected with my dad's problem? Genetics?
Hi,
How is your dad? Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common type of kidney cancer in adults. The greatest risk factors for RCC are lifestyle-related such as smoking, obesity and hypertension. Occupational exposure to some chemicals such as asbestos, cadmium, lead, chlorinated solvents, petrochemicals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon may also be contributory. Genetic mutations have been identified as the cause of inherited cancer risk in some RCC cancer–prone families but these mutations are estimated to account for only 1% - 2% of cases.
