I have passed a 10mm stone on a bus. How did I know? I had lithotripsy a few days before and they busted up one that was in the ureter and the other was a 10 mm still in the kidney. I was still working on passing the fragments when the 10mm started rolling through while I was on a bus. I get kidney stones every year or two and normally on the left side which is where this stone was. It passed and it was large when it came out. My urologist said since get stones on that side it is easier for me to pass as the tubes (ureter and urethra) have expanded. If this is your first or second stone you will not be able to pass it without a lithotripsy.

It's highly improbable that you'll pass a 9mm stone, if not impossible. And yes... a stone "bouncing around" inside your kidney (renal cavity) can cause pain. Your doctor will tell you that it's 'not supposed' to cause pain, but take it from me... it'll cause pain. Not a constant pain, mind you, but more of a colicy (on & off) pain.
When the stone decides to descend, it'll get hung up in your ureter, and they'll have to go in and get it. Now THAT will be painful (the stone getting hung up). That'll cause hydronephrosis and cause you quite a large amount of pain. Just keep on top of it and be prepared to take a trip to the ER when you start feeling the wrath of the descending stone.
Good luck to you.
