How are you? How's your daughter? It is good to hear that no catheter was used and there were no blockage present. Dilation of the kidney simply means the collecting system, which collects the urine the kidney has made and brings it to the bladder, is bigger than normal. This can be normal, be a sign of reflux or of possible obstruction. Since there were no signs of obstruction or reflux, there is no need to worry. With her previous UPJ obstruction surgery when she was a baby, monitoring is important to ensure that no future obstruction and hence, preservation of kidney function.

She was able to have the test with out the cath so it went better than with.
They said there was no blockage but need to watch her kidneys so they do not thin out as she grows. What does that mean? Could her kidneys become more dilated as she gets older? If so, what would happen?
When is she scheduled for the scan? It is really a difficult time for twelve year olds for such things to happen.Your individual feelings, attitudes and values may be just as important as the facts in weighing your options for your daughter. It would be best if you discuss this with your urologist and let him know what you feel about this.
Take care and regards.
My urologist does not say she needs it but the tec at the hospital says the Radiologist
says she does. What else can I suggest to them. She is at such a hard age and I feel it would bother her to have a catheter.
Hi maryjane333,
How are you? How is your daughter? Renal scans help to evaluate the function the kidneys. Foley Catheter is necessary so the doctors can monitor the fluid levels and also reduce the discomfort of having to lie still with a full bladder. However, if this bothers you, you should talk with your doctor for other options.
