stone in base of kidney

Hi all I am new to this forum. I was misdiagnose back in 2009 and passed an 8mm stone at home. I've been having the same kind of severe lower back  pain, and pain in left flank, for the past 2 weeks. Went to emerge tonight and had a CT which shows there's a 3-4 mm stone in the base of my left kidney. Urine shows RBC's and WBC's, so they're treating me as though it's just a UTI,(septra DS) because they said the stone isn't obstructing anything.

I don't believe it's just a UTI, because there's too much back pain and no bladder discomfort! I feel this stone must be on the move.
Anyway, I was wondering if any of you know, how long does it take to pass a stone when it's in the base of a kidney? I'm not sure if I should be expecting it to be coming out soon, or waiting a long time...
Thanks in advance!

When my recent episode earlier this year hit me with those three stones, I was being treated by the VA for my general medical issues. For many reasons, the VA dropped the ball for me on that issue and I had to seek a civilian urologist to do the needed surgery. From the way you are saying it will take months to see a Urologist, I figure you might be in Canada as I understand the waits for medical care there can be longer.  Maybe with your history and the fact that you definitely do have kidney stones a urologist will kind of push you to the front of the list and see you much quicker. When you call for an appointment, please remember to tell them your present situation and the horrible pain you are in now.

Thank you for the reply, that's what I was afraid of! I am just wondering If I'm going to continue to have this pain until the stones pass.  Getting in to see a urologist here will take months, and I can't imagine being in this much pain long term. I'm going out of my mind :(

The simple and unfortunate answer is that it will take as long as it takes. There's really no set time. During the last 30 plus years I normally would pass a stone the size of the one you are dealing with right after I had the severe pain, went to the emergency room and got a shot with a good pain killer and went home. That was up until earlier this year when it took my from March to early May and 3 stones still hadn't passed after 2 ER visits  so a Urologist had to go in and remove all three stones. I learned then that it just depends on the stone(s) and apparently there is nothing with these things that is "normal" time wise for them to pass and come out
