Fatty Liver 10 yrs after biopsy

I was wondering if there were any supplements i could take that would help me with a fatty liver. I have had a fatty liver since i was 18, and the thing is i'm not obese, diabetic, my bloods are good except my liver panel, ive had a biopsy that ruled out wilsons and other problems back in 2000. Ive even lost some weight, but again if i am overweight i at most am 10 pounds over. When i lose the weight i do find my liver numbers go down, but i have trouble keeping them that way for long. I worry abou the constant elevation because i know its only a matter of time before the damage adds up to fibrosis or worse , and that truly scares me. I want to know if there are any supplements that are being studied or show promise which may help the liver out. I also have made an appointment to come see Dr. Schiano at Mount Sinai, but the earliest is in July, until then is there anything you think i should do? Here are my most recent lab numbers Alt-126, Ast 47, GGTP- was elevated, my most recent MRCP was in Dec and it showed only a markedly fatty liver. I also have had all the hep screenings multiple times as well as my ANA checked and they are all fine. Thanks for you time Doc i know your extremely busy and sought after, any info you could provide is greatly appriciated.

Joe

i think alpha lipic acid is reasonable as is milk thistle and both have been used by people to treat liver disease.  The fibrosure test is indeed a blood test.

Is the Fibrosure test a blood test? Also what do you think of supplementing with Alpha Lipoic acid. Ive supplemented with it in the past and it seems to have helped my liver numbers. Ive also read studies that suggest the use of Alpha lipoic acid for people with hepatic problems. Should i start using it again maybe? And do you think Milk Thistle holds any weight in the fight against liver damage?

i do not think there is a link between the liver and the appendicitis.  you can get a repeat liver biopsy if not done within the last 5-6 years or serial measurements of fibrosure test.

so sorry i forgot to include this in the earlier post. I was Hospitalized for a day last week with what was diagnosed as Epiloic Appendagitis, it was diagnoised after blood tests and a cat scan with contrast, the pain is gone, but do you think there is a link between that inflamation and the inflamation in my liver? By the way my C-reactive protien is normal.

Thank you so much for taking the time out to answer my question. I just have one further question if you wouldnt mind. With my elevated liver numbers and the fluctuation in my liver numbers in the past few years what test or tests do you believe would be most beneficial in pointing me in the right direction as to how to prevent liver damage. Thank you so much for your time!

there are no randomized controlled trials about treatment for fatty liver.  as long as there is no fibrosis or minimal fibrosis on the liver biopsy i do not think your disease will advance if you continue doing what you're doing.  herbs that poeple use are licorice root, schizandra, astragalus, coenzyme Q and turmeric.
