Want supplements and herbs that mainstream medicine approves of?

In another thread Rico said and I agree:

" I wish mainstream medicine was more respectful of natural medicines. I also wish insurance recognized them as actual medicines and covered at least some of the cost."

To do that we have to first repeal the  Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994.

Here is a bit I wrote about the DSHEA and herbal/supplements when people were asking the same thing:

[...] lack of FDA oversight of supplements since the DSHEA was established in 1994.

When you use supplements it is necessary to research the purity of them on your own. The FDA no longer does that---- as it did pre-DSHEA.

Here is what the NEJM said about it:

http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp0904768

excerpt:
"Before 1994, herbal products were considered food additives, and their manufacturers were required to show proof of safety before marketing them. Since the passage of the DSHEA, dietary supplements are presumed to be safe and can be marketed with very little oversight.

The DSHEA presents serious obstacles to the FDA’s ability to detect and eliminate contaminated supplements. A wide range of dietary supplements have been found to be contaminated with toxic plant material, heavy metals, or bacteria. Of particular concern are the dozens of dietary supplements that are contaminated with prescription medications, controlled substances, experimental compounds, or drugs rejected by the FDA because of safety concerns."

Oh, and don't forget how FAIM (Foundation for Alternative and Integrative Medicine--- the old one, not the new one) was behind the DSHEA. You'd be surprised at some of the names that helped FAIM--- one even wrote one of the best guidelines for treating Lyme.

So research the heck out of your supplements and herbs. You can probably find some safe ones.

"Thomas Jefferson couldn't have realized what the future of medicine might hold for Americans just as he didn't know the importance of future gun laws."

I hope that doesn't mean you're a gun control advocate.  Shooting targets with a 118yr old US rifle is one of those things that brings me much happiness, and occasionally they get used to feed what I feel is a higher than normal genetic need for protein.  Got to have what it takes to make those neurotransmitters, antibodies and such.  You know the "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness", mentioned in the Declaration of Independence.

I guess I am lucky my LLMD believes in mainstream medicine and holistic healing so she has no problem with the herbs I am on.

If my liver enzymes didn't get dangerously high from abx I might still be on then except I must confess after 18 month on abx, I am feeling better off of them.

The verified quote by Jefferson is:

"Was the government to prescribe to us our medicine and diet, our bodies would be in such keeping as our souls are now."

Read Snopes.

It's great that you're free to choose your own medications/herbs/ supplements.  That's what Thomas Jefferson wanted.

I'm glad that the government is overseeing my health and medications and food but that doesn't mean I don't keep a watchful eye on my government as well! (grin)

As one example of 'governmental interference' I receive notifications of possible food contaminations from the USDA. Most of them don't have any impact on me but, for instance, if I lived in CA in Jan 2014 I would have received this:
"001-2014 Missouri Firm Recalls Mechanically Separated Chicken Products Due To Possible Salmonella Heidelberg Contamination | En Español"
I could therefore avoid buying those products and avoid Samonella.

Thomas Jefferson couldn't have realized what the future of medicine might hold for Americans just as he didn't know the importance of future gun laws.

He's also one of more misquoted Presidents around. Too bad for his ideas were very on-point for his time, for the most part. Just not always on-point for the 21st century.

All the talk about regulation and such sure makes me glad I live in the middle of 6000+ of woods!  Things that have been messed up in me since childhood are getting better, so I have no doubt as to the efficacy of herbals, my herbals, picked and processed by my own swollen hands.  No way any division of the govt is going to tell me what I can, can't or shouldn't partake of, thank God.

All around me there is help, some of the most common things are the most effective, and what I like the most, they're all free for the taking.  Some of you have seen my favorite quote posted before, but I'm going to post it again.

"If people let the government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny."
