Anyone worried over North Korea stating they wont honer the 1953 peace accords??

Today in life, with just the everyday things that are going on, there is so much to think and worry about. Then come home eat your dinner watch the evening news and bam!!!! Right in the face you hear about a crazy little nut case in North Korea, that says they are not going to honer the 1953, peace accords. They set off a nuclear bomb test and this idiot is willing to start a war.

My big Question is we have 30 to 40 thousand trrops on the DMZ, and if they do try to invade South Korea the men and women of our country there wont stand a chance. So why don't we do something about it? This man needs to be stopped, he could very well sell a nuclear device to the Islamic nuts of the world. Plus we owe to our men and South Korea to put a stop to this idiot. Now before all of you bleeding heart liberals jump all over me think about what this nut is trying to do, start a world war, he even has Russia worried.

So I had my say lets see how much I am going to get beat up, and how many agree. So have at it...peace and love to all...brian

I agree with the need for that country to be stopped. And if any country declares war on us or takes aggressive action I support the need to declare war back. The problem is the consequences if one of those nuclear bombs were to be aimed at us. Or anywhere for that matter. And they have the support of China who has nuclear weapons as well. I always have concerns about countries that are opposed to us that have nuclear weapons and that's why the situation with Pakistan is so edgy. A nuclear war is not winnable. Frankly I thought after the cold war nuclear weapons would be phased out but if a country such as North Korea can't honor their end, its harder for law abiding countries to seek nuclear arms reduction. My stepfather who passed on many years ago was in the Korean war and saw active duty and in discussing it frankly I think the war should have ended with the two countries united under one democratic whole. The people of North Korea have suffered and died needlessly and if they didn't have nuclear arms and allies that did I would have no problem with their government having to step down by whatever means. They are one of the last totalitarian communist regimes left and probably will be the last to go for that reason.

Thank you for putting it up jollyman I wondered what had happened to our past enjoyment of Politicking ..we used to have some good old upper and downers as the Brits say..It does worry me as I think it needs us to stand up and be counted the way America used to, I think the rest of the world has realised that we have been weakened by the negativity and we are being tested to see how we react,  Clinton did come out yesterday and say it wont be tolerated.Theres also Iran of course remember the mad guy that Obama was doing the pals high five hand shake with , well turns out that he has been helping N Korea ,,,surprise surprise,,,I do think China has to get involved ..

Do we not have a world peace organization? Same thing as with Hussein. Nobody doing nothing about him flaunting his threats. I understand he tested an underground nuke a week or so ago that caused an earthquake of 4.something? And has fired missiles since then. Iran is right there also.  I am afraid it is simply a matter of time before we have that nuclear strike somewhere in the world and our only retaliation at that time will be to nuke em right back. So, where do we go from there? Options are limited with nuclear. Gone are the days of guns and horses. Today our enemies are not afraid to die, because if they do they are gonna go to heaven and get virgins! How do you fight someone that is not afraid to die other than annihilate them?

Well that's the problem with nuclear weapons is due to their radioactive effects a nuclear war would eventually destroy everything on earth. I well remember being in fear of a nuclear war as a kid. Everyone was. I was glad when the various communist regimes fell but was disappointed we didn't take stronger worldwide action to phase out nuclear weapons. The usage of unconventional weapons has been gradually phased out but the United States and Russia waited too long to eliminate the stores of the smallpox virus before we could safely rule out that the potential existed that terrorists had obtained it. So when 9-11 occured there had to be vaccinations even though the virus was technically eliminated from earth except for that one stock and the vaccinations themselves are not completely safe. As for conventional weapons such as standard missiles and guns yes if we are attacked we have the right to strike back at any time. Its just that nuclear weapons would create global damage. I was happy to see the cold war end and it was beyond depressing to see an actual war open up and as that potential existed steps should have been taken to phase out nuclear weapons before then.
The United States and Russia are taking responsible steps but as they already exist in North Korea and nuclear material could end up in other terrorist states that they could use to build weapons with its not so easy. Gone are the days of negotiation (as ended even the Cuban missile crisis) but unlike any attack with conventional weapons on terrorists a nuclear war with its radioactive fallout is just not within potential and something all leaders have been trying to avoid since the creation of these weapons.

The problem also is that Iran is doing the same thing and has come out today  threatening us saying they will continue their quest for Nuclear power,I can only assume that the US is having talks with China to get them more involved thats why they are so quiet on the issue,  I think the talks also involve Japan as Japan signed a treaty saying they wouldnt use any weapons after  wwii Nagasaki /Hyroshama (sorry about spelling)

So, don't we have nuclear weapons?

I don't know what we should do but I do know that the third party talks are not working nor is the one on one.  So, maybe we need to use our power as well.  I don't know but they are just crazy in N. Korea and Iran.  I really think that they are looking to take out Isreal but then what do we do?  Not many of these countries seem to ever follow the treaties they sign.  So, we need to come up with a different strategy that actually works.

Clinton talks a good talk but is she getting any backing by the President.  Obama doesn't seem to be all that concerned about it.  He would rather be in Las Vegas making 4 million dollars for the Democratic Party or playing Golf.  This is rather disturbing to me!

Generally economic sanctions worked on North Korea. They have done this before and that usually makes them see reason. I am more concerned if they give any of these weapons to a country connected with the Taliban. They are not open to negotiation. I support Israel but not to the point where we should prioritize them over other countries and I and other Jewish people I know would agree. They are another country and they must fight their own battles. The United States does its share and we do support them as we should but we must put our country first as with any other country. I know people don't agree with everything President Obama does. I don't either. But I'm not so sure if he spends that much time as regards leisure. When George Bush was president people on the other side made the same talk then about him being on vacation all the time when action was needed and I didn't believe that aspect of why they disliked him. People may not like President Obama's actions but I do see direct action every day. Fundraisers and events like that are conducted by every leader of every political party and done to conduct media attention.

I agree with you that I also do not want these weapons to get in the hands of the Taliban; if they haven't already.  I also support Isreal as we should.  We also have to keep our Country safe first.  Isreal can definitely take care of themself if needed.  They definitely have the capability.  It is really up to them to decide what to do but we also need to support them as well.  Maybe not by being involved directly but at least to not condemn them when they stand up for their country.

As far as all of the political parties doing fundraisers; that is fine and all but they are not the President and trying to recover from a recession, threat of war, Nuclear Weapons, and many other issues.  When are country is facing massive amounts of debt and then we watch them raise all this money to give to a political organization; does not make sense no matter what party the money goes to.  I do not see direct action from Obama everyday.  I see little pieces when it seems to be convenient for him or when someone brings it up too often and he has to address it, but as far as him being active; I am going to have to respectfully disagree.  He just does not have the experience to deal with these issues and that was what I was afraid of from the very start.  I am not saying Bush did everything perfectly because that would be a lie.  He caused a lot of trouble as well.  They are all too worried about their backs and not our country.  All:  meaning politician and presidents.  Maybe someday we will actually have a President that wants to do what is best for America, the American people, and our economy.  I guess until the we must wait and see.

Respectfully,

Melissa

As for issues of national security some of the members of the defense department from the Bush administration are part of the Obama administration. And President Obama did insist on military tribunals for the prisoners in Guantanamo and the democrats in the Senate are giving him a hard time about that. People might not agree with all of his stances but he does not ignore the other side nor automatically state and approve (in this matter certainly) what the political party that supported him wanted. As for what's best for America its up to Americans to get involved and speak out. That's always been a part of the democratic process. Because of what is going on and security issues we may not be party to every negotiation on this high a level as regards national security and I cannot say it should be otherwise. Here as elsewhere they have to be a means of checks and balances.

The United States better stand behind Israel no matter what, because if we don't noone will and rather then the British Israel is the best ally we have. I really don't think that Obama has the experience and the will for this problem. These people cannot be reasoned with or talked to action needs to be taken and soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In these times, it will take us all working together to keep peace. No one man or one nation for that matter will be able to do this alone, hence the talks with Russia, Japan etc. I think we need to look at the bigger picture here.  As far as Israel goes, per the book, anyone who messes with Israel is in big dodo.  Israel has kept its restraint so far thanks to the us, however, they are getting tired of being picked at and I don't blame them. As far as what is being done by our president, I am sure behind the scene it is being dealt with. Let us remember that not everything that goes on in Washington, we are privy to, nor should we be. Otherwise there is no such thing as security of our country.  I trust the people put in place by the president to keep their eyes out and take steps accordingly.  Just cause they are not on the news every day telling us what they think is irrelevant

This mornings news that N Korea has sent another short range Missile and called the US and S Korea hypocrites I hope you are right those who think we should stay on the sidelines, I dont think it bodes well ,and does send a message to others like Iran that we have no real power anymore ..if we have our President doesnt feel inclined to do anything, I think out threat level has been raised .By the way it isnt really okay in this economic climate for him to be flying all over the place to rub shoulders with Hollywood, it costs a fortune for him to move out of Washington, its all politics .

I think the Obama administration realizes that China is going to have to step up to the plate in this situation. Without a doubt, the Obama administration is working behind the scenes in dealing with this situation. Of course China is the main supplier for North Korea and supplies oil and food to the starving country. So they have more leverage in this situation and are going to have to get onboard and threaten Kim Jong II.

I don't worry about the situation, but I am concerned. What concerns me the most is that if all of these countries, including China, cut off supplies to North Korea.... then what will Kim Jong do then ? Since his country is armed with nuclear weapons, then what would stop this madman from selling that technology to Iran or other terrorist controlled coutries ?

Obviously this is a difficult situation and since our resources are tied up in Iraq and Afghanistan, we are going to have to ask other countries to step up to the plate and I believe they will.

I cannot believe the crazy criticism of Obama.
From;
http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2009/01/16/politics/politicalhotsheet/entry4728085.shtml

"George W. Bush is today making his final visit to Camp David as president....The planned three-day stay, during which the president is being joined by family and former and current aides, will bring his total time spent at Camp David to all or part of 487 days. Yes, that's 487 days. And Camp David is not even where the president has spent the most time when not at the White House: Knoller reports that Mr. Bush has made 77 visits to his ranch in Crawford during his presidency, and spent all or part of 490 days there."

That's one third of his presidency spent away from the White House - did you think that was alright? What do you think that cost the US?

The truth is the US can't do anything about N. Korea without China's involvement. China supports N. Korea and without China's support N. Korea would be completely isolated and broke. If that happened there would be no food which would trigger a mass exodus from N. Korea into China and China doesn't need a huge influx of people right now.
But, if Japan and Taiwan threatened to build up their military and we proposed putting anti-missiles on the S - N. Korea border China might act in order to attempt to maintain the type of "stability" in that region they like. But, China is the key and we can only do so much. I wonder whether you preferred the bluster of our former president. I thought it unseemly and quite ineffective and probably damaging.
Iran? I detest the rhetoric of Ahmadinejad and concede that he could prove to be very dangerous if he had nuclear capabilities. But when you look at the big picture I don't think Iran has ever, in its history, invaded another country - if you don't count providing weapons to insurgents in Iraq. Iran is a country which does have real estate abd real assets to protect and a nuclear strike would assure its annihilation. I don't believe that Iran would make that choice. I worry more about Pakistan which seems to be losing control to the Taliban who don't appear to have any interest in protecting anything - even their own lives. That situation scares me more than does Iran.
Pakistan, India, N. Korea, China, France, Israel, United Kingdom, Russia and the US all have nuclear weapons but we tell Iran they can't have that capability. No, I don't like seeing them on the verge of having that weapon but I really don't like anyone having nuclear weapons. I have trouble understanding why we assume the right to dictate to another country what military capability they are allowed to have. If we really do have that right what can we do to stop them? The world is not like it was and we can't seem to control other countries like we used to be able to. We all really do see that - don't we? And it is not Obama's fault - surely we can see that clearly. I know when we're frightened we want blame someone but it really isn't that simple.
Something that occurs to me is that here we are, only 4 months into Obama's presidency and I hear people saying that he owns the economy - that he is responsible. OK, assume that 4 months in the economy is on him and N. Korea is as well and Iran too. If that's true then how can anyone not say that 911 was Bush's fault and that he bears full responsibility for those attacks? He was nearly 8 months into his presidency after all and he did have intelligence warning of an attack and yet he did nothing to protect us. It really is unbelievable that the same people who say that Bush kept us safe when we were attacked 7.5 months into his presidency can turn around and say that Obama is to blame for our economy, Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons and N. Korea's missile testing and nuclear capability only 4 months into his presidency.
I should repeat that I am not in awe of Obama and I have disagreed with several of his decisions. I do not see him as a messiah or a deity or perfect. I do see him as a reasonable man trying hard to get us out of a very difficult situation and I am willing to give him some time. Apparently many here don't see it that way.

It's SO good to hear from you and read your intelligent remarks.  I have missed "discussing" with you.

One note - those that blame Obama for the economy-  Does that mean that he should be also commended on the news reports that we are about to approach recovery?  Several economist have stated that they believe that within a year we will be out of the recession and even though unemployment might continue to rise - we are close to a recovery.  SO, does he get a high five for that accomplishment?  I bet he won't.

That is very kind of you. I doubt very many members here will share your view, however. I wonder why I post sometimes but it is just so one sided that I think someone should at least try to present a different perspective.
I am hopeful Cowgirl but cautiously so. I am not smart enough to understand the complexity of our economic situation much less the global situation. But, I am an eternal optimist so I think we'll get through this - I just hope it's soon.

The thing that concerns me more than believing that Kim Jong is going to send nukes at us is the fact that he and Iran will be able to sell the capability /materials to other terrorist countries, I do agree that Japan ,Taiwan and China should step up to the plate.

I agree - and it seems the world is in a place we have never experienced in our lifetime or even our parents!

I am thinking back to the time when we feared Russia and had actual drills at school on an attack (I don't know if that was across the country - but it was practiced in Alabama) and the fear there of the big bad Russians....  Maybe we have gotten complacent through the years and the complacency has affected our security as well as the economy.  If that is true - discussions regarding both should be encouraged in hopes of making this a better place for us all and our children (eternal optimist, too).

Glad to hear from you again!
