Just shake my head

I just cannot beleive how dumb some of our young people are these days. here is what i am talking about.. ever go to the grocery store or a McDonalds something like that.. get what u are going to buy go to the register and the person working cannot figure out ur change without looking at the register.. this morning on the way to dialysis i stopped at McDonalds got a breakfest sandwhich and a small drink, my bill came to $3.61,, i handed the person $.00. for some reason the register wasnt working, and the person was looking for a calculator, i ask waht the problem was and they said they were trying to figure out my change.. i said it is 31 cents.. the person went and got the mgr to figure it out.. now come on u cant figure that out in ur head, i think is so sad what are they teaching our young ppl in school, if u cant do simple math in ur head???  JUST MAKES ME SHAKE MY HEAD

It's not that hard to count out change. I'll definitely make sure my kids know how to do that!

It's a real shame. I was at a neighborhood party this summer, and we were all talking politics. I was floored when my neighbors daughter who is in her second year at Harvard, did not know who **** Cheney was. Too take it further, she was not aware that D.C. stands for District of Columbia. And this ditz wants to become a Doctor???? I hope that she's not going to be a brain surgeon, since you need a brain to do so.

yes its a public school in MI. a credit is a term meant for a class that lasts a full year. for example if they have gym from sept-dec it would be 1/2 credit..They need 22 (I believe and if Im wrong its close) credits to graduatents

accually I think its a bit harder, ny kids were introduced to computers in kindergarden,, when I was a kid K was just play time and abc's

also they are teaching math skills earlier for example I did not learn division until 4th grade,,my kids learned it in second,,,,,I think it stresses kids out a bit,,but its a tough world...My generation could get by without college or trade school not so anymore.

I have 2 yrs of college and math was my worst subject,,,they teach math different now

for example when doing simple subtraction you dont borrow and carry you trade and re-name it makes it hard for parents to help their kids.

and I still think kids should be left behind if they cant pull atleast a c- adverage,

Hah! I Forgot Science! how ironic. :)

I loved the science classes so I didn't really consider it school work. I may have done four years, I don't really remember.

Is this a typical school (public)? And what does "4 credits" mean? I don't recall the credit system (doesn't mean it wasn't used). I just recall it was how many years of each subject.

Do you get an impression that the work load is easier or harder for the average student compared to when we were kids?

I remember when the big issue of "Book weight" came up for us kids. They realized us wee tots were lugging around 40-50 pounds of book weight and it was hurting our little spines and giving us aches in our footsies. :->

Now kids have "luggage type wheeled bookbags", I'd have killed for one of those!

Same with grammar, jollyman. English isn`t my first language but we did spend quite some time studying the irregular verbs for example. Some things just need to be learned by heart. Sleep slept slept. Go went gone. Shoot shot shot. Rise rose risen. My six year old did better with those verbs around age 4 than now while he is surrounded by 9-year-olds who talk the simplified "The sun rised, he shooted and sleeped". Sometimes I could bang my head against a wall but I won`t give up yet.... At my job we have the same issues with drafting. Computer aided drafting is all great but it is much greater if you have learned to do it manually first. Nothing comes without patience, repetition and brain power, no matter how much software we involve. It is sad to look at baby toys. Most of them only teach the message: press button here, light or sound will appear. There is no more room for inventive minds.

I can understand the concept that computers make learning certain types of math unnecessary in every day life, but the actual supposed purpose of school (besides being a huge babysitting service) is that it teaches children how to learn.

I get the distinct impression that schools don't really do that anymore.

I'm curious, does anyone actually know what the High School requirements are nowadays for each class?

When I went to school it was:

Math: Required up to Trigonometry (including geometry) with Calculus as an optional.

English: All four years; studies included the works of William Shakespeare, as well as other great works (Twain, Huxley, Auden, etc..)

Social Studies: All right, i considered this subject a joke even back then. It was three years of learning a very skewed version of history in which America was God and everyone else was just thumping each other over their heathen barbarian heads waiting for America to show up.
I recall I got sent to the Principal's office one time for demanding to know more about Australia than the fact it was "One of the seven continents (and has kangaroos).
I consider it a huge mistake I even showed up to those classes. I've spent my whole life unlearning the **** they taught me in high school social studies. :)

Foreign Language: Three year requirement. I took Latin (one of three choices, including french and english).

Then there was gym (four years). You had to do it even if you were a member of one of the teams! (Football, track, etc)

And the other electives (Shop, home economics (I took it, great way to meet girls! :),creative writing, god, typing!, as well as computers and sex education. Have I missed any?

OH, btw, my sex education teacher kicked *ss!! She was was also a gym teacher and a hard core lesbian (not very out, this was the 80's. It was the school "secret-not secret"). She gave out the final exam on the first day of class and said anyone who got a perfect score didn't have to show up to class the rest of the year.

Of course, no one got a perfect score. :)

i am 19 years old and i work at a ice cream place, we have high tech computers and when you tender it you can choose the bill you want so the computer gives you the amount, but we aren't allowed to do that, which is good. because it's so much easier to just do it counting it all out. i always count the change back to them too.

Yeah, and they have pictures on the register keys too.  It's sad.  And don't dare give them change along with your money.  If you total is $11.12 and you give them $21.12 in order to get a ten dollar bill back they will hesitate and stop functioning.  How about we weren't even allowed to have calculators in school!!!

its because we have the leave no kid behind system that is stupid if they dont pass english, math etc...they should have to repeat the year ..we are graduating students with D- adverages who ar almost illeterate pathetic huh??  Fail the kids who fail lets make em learn like the used to do when I was a kid.  No body wanted to fail so they actually did things like ummmmm their assignments and home-work

I agree it is pretty pathetic. I can still recall my first job in a florist when I was a teenager. My Mother sat me down and made me make change to her over and over. Told me not to depend on a machine for the answer. I am still grateful she did that for me.

I will teach my daughter the same skills.

These kids now a days have me shaking my head in disbelief on a daily basis, I have no idea why the parents do not step up and mold these youngsters into intelligent upstanding citizens.
