What Books do you Read? Or Don't?

Another question or two I asked lately prompted me to ask this out of curiosity;

What books do you read? What Type? How many do you read in a month? A year?

I'm curious because I've noticed lately that the concept of reading books seems to be becoming a dead art. The only time I here about someone reading nowadays is when they mention;

"I read books while in jail, but haven't done it since I got out."

Which shows you the type of people I sometimes hang out with. :->

Hey, can I chime in?!

I love Cormac McCarthy!  Clockwork Ornage is not good to teach yourself english, but a great book!  I've read everything by Truman Capote, and I recommend him to everybody.  Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison is beautiful and so is almost anything by James Baldwin.

I love good fantasy fiction, Tolkien of course, but also Steven Erichson and Tad Williams, among others.  For a woman fantasy writer there's Ursula LeGuin - great!!

For horror fans I would say try HP Lovecraft (classic stuff and a lot of fun) and, for someting more modern, Peter Straub.

Classic british tales by Evelyn Waugh, Jane Austin and many others are lovely.

The Russians like Tolstoy are a lot of fun, try Anna Karenina instead of War and Peace!

I like like Wally Lamb's I know This Much is True

Patricia Highsmith's Ripley mysteries are great and everything by PD James, or, for an American mystery there's Hammett and Chandler, always great stuff.

Wow, I'll stop now, I could go on and on!! I always have a book going, sometimes 2 or 3!! And there's never enough time to get to them all.

Good observation. I see most book stores in my area evaporating. Since motherhood my joy of reading has been a theoretical one, I read half a page and fall asleep... Nevertheless, I always enjoyed Ayn Rand,  I like Japanese authors in general, I liked a few books by Stephen E. Ambrose and sometimes I am drawn back to "my own roots" and read Goethe`s Faust. But a big chunk of books I buy nowadays are non-fiction. Not exactly self-help books but along the line of "What you always wanted to know about Hinduism" or "How to fix your old Nissan" or "All about King Ludwig". At school we used to translate books of Greek philosophers year after year and while it was interesting back then, to be honest, nowadays if it were the end of my days, I would rather grab a humorous Dave Barry off the shelf... So, there you go.

I have always felt curious about The Lord of the Ring. I would not dare read that book because of the language (too old or classic). I would have to read one paragraph like 10 times minimum and that's with good luck. So, I would never be able to finish the Intro.

I am an avid reader.  When I am working it takes me a couple of weeks for a book just reading a bit before bed but when I am off I inhale them.  When I was off for surgery this summer (6 weeks) I read 12.  I absolutely love Jodi Picoult's books.  I also enjoy lots of legal or murder mysteries and books by Diana Gabaldon.  Outside of my fiction reading I read about 3 magazines a week and constantly read and collect cookbooks.  The newspaper gets read every day.  I sure hope my eyesight lasts me into my old age.

  I read constantly! And I like a wide variety of books. Some of my absolute favorites are Stephen King, Lee Child, Janet Evanovich, David Baldacci, John Sanford, Iris Johanson. JA Jance, Jackie Collins, Micheal Connally, just to name a few. When I am not feeling up to getting out and doing much, I can read anywhere from 15 to 20 books per month.

I like  all of Maury Povichs books,   Recently read   95 Minutes in Heaven by some regular guy who was ina car accident died, and came back after 95 min , his story is incredable.   I bought   The Secret  because Oprah had it on her show but just cant get into it.

I like self help books during the day,  and  romances or some other novels at night, the self help stuff makes me think too much then I cant sleep, I have to admit i like Dr,Phils books.  I also try to read a few passages from the Bible daily.  Most of my reading however is Magazine articles.
