Ants in the said Plum tree

well I would go to the foot of our stairs as my Mom used to say, being a Brit ..I was outside eating my biccy and swigging my coffee and I took a loo at my plum tree well it is a mass of ants..the small ones..covered in them almost moving...well it made me freak out a bit as I have plums, not many on the tree not ripe .I think the tree is an actual nest ...what can I do ...?
