Cilantro

Hi All:) I started my very first garden this year. I planted romaine hearts, Ice burg lettuce, broccoli, cucumbers (which are blooming like CRAZY), watermelon, tomatoes (1 plant), red & green peppers (1 plant each), Jalapenos (1 plant), and cherry red hot peppers (1 plant)....So my journey has been filed with trial and error. My first error was waiting too long to pick my broccoli. They ended up flowering. I Googled this and found out that it was too late to pick them once flowered so now I know. (6 plants later..lol) I also have a herb garden of onions (which i don't think did well b/c when I pulled them the bulb was still small but the stem was over 6' tall so I chucked them..), garlic (They are still in the ground) Cilantro, basil, German thyme, rosemary and parsley. So these are my questions.... How do I know when I can pick or start using the cilantro, onions (for next time), and garlic? Also for next season how would I know when the broccoli is ready to be picked? and once I pick them, do they come back? I can take pics if you guys want so you can see what I'm talking about as far as the herb garden goes...thanks in advance:)

@ bbxx that makes so much sense...I'll try that in the fall. They are supposed to be a cold weather crop so hopefully I'll get my 2nd chance:)

Hey, hubby says in New England you need to get onion plants, not just the bulbs or they wont grow.

Very good advice. I never knew that about the broccoli so that is really good info. I did hear to ALWAYS wash the veggies thoroughly b/c of salmonella. Thank you:) I agree with you on the onions in butter with a nice cut of steak....YUMMMY!!!!

Hey, good for you gardening! Teach  your son to garden and cook and he will have the ladies in line for marriage. lol
Ok, onions you wait til the tops fall over laying on the ground. Then pick them and let the tops dry just a few hours in the dry air.  OOOOOH I LOVE onions in butter with a good steak! lol  (ha ha I love food in case you havent heard lol)
I am not familiar with growing garlic becuase we didnt do well with it.
Never grew cilantro.
Broccoli I never grew, but FYI--it will be LOADED with worms and needing to be soaked in salt water a billion times. The worms look like broccoli bits only they move. lol
My guess is as soon as it looks like broccoli you would normally buy--pick it.
Herbs I cant help with. :(
