Autumn 2009
What's autumn like in your area? Is this year pretty typical or not? Feel free to share.
Depends on where you go as evergreens do not have the rich colors as other trees.. but we can find plenty of color if ya look :) the bay's plants take on such lovely reds and browns and yellows. the maple elder and ash are all remarkable although not a prominent as in some states.. I have seen some of your fall colors of last year and they are lovely.. I was hoping to catch some myself this year :))
Right now it's raining out and pretty dark looking. Seems to happen about as the trees start turning. So far our ash trees are about halfway turned. They are still green in a few areas, but have kind of a painted look where the yellow has been placed in some areas. Ash trees are usually the first to turn into their fall colors and the first to shed them. In neighborhoods full of ash trees, they make a nice golden glow for about a couple days, then drop their leaves. After the ash trees are about done, then other trees are in progress. So far our maples are still green, except for the edges that are starting to change and a few branches that have turned earlier than the others.
I've been shooting the trees, but haven't uploaded many of them to the internet yet.

Oooh, can't wait to see the photo's that will be shared of autumn's glory. The trees are squeezing out the color and against that blue sky, I sigh. Why? Because I want to freeze those moments...and that is why we have CAMERAS!!!!! YEs!!!!!!!
I don't want to pick favorites because the golden glow looks like halo's around those trees, and the flaming red's are hot, hot--HOT!!!!
The squirrels are scurrying back & forth, some becoming permanently disabled :-((((
However, I catch glimpse of the chipmunks getting in on the action. Fall is the one time of the year when I say ....everything, including the dirt looks good!!!!! It blends together in color & textures....along with the smells & sounds of crackling leaves. The heavy wind will come to wrench the stranglers off those branches and trees structure is exposed like our character when under stress.
The nights carry the nip to nudge us to hurry a bit faster into our homes. I keep thinking of a poem I tried to write 20 plus years ago to capture what I felt when I watched those leaves fall.....they seemed like tears falling. Some seemed like parachute jumpers, some would glide and others slide. Time to go, time to glow while the winds blow........

I love that burning wood smell at night. For some reason, it really smells good in the fall more than any other time. I switched out my wind chimes to the copper chimes and blue butterfly. I think the colors look the best in the fall with the yellow walnut leaves. (right now still green)
It's kinda sad, many leaves are turning brown and falling before changing color. I heard that's because of the drought this year, that the autumn show won't be as colorful as other years. :(

Well its 100 degrees at presant and everything is kinda dirty brown, we are under mandatory watering, my sprinklers are only allowed to be on for a short time, we are hoping for rain by next month......but we have had some beautiful California sunsets, or smog sets as some call them here,we are also being called Mexifornia ..I wonder why .
Not only did we have a drought but an early killing frost and snow!

Fortunately I did snap some pictures of trees/branches that did turn. Looks like the Ash trees and yellow-turning maple trees are suffering the most. (ash is usually the first to turn and yellow maples are usually later.)
