Infection or miscarraige? Please help

Hi, I am just turned 50 and have regular periods although their length has varied a bit in the last 3 mths. I had tests 2yrs ago and was told by my dr that I was still ovulating but despite not using birth control, I did not get pregnant. this month my period was over 2wks late so I was going to give it another week and then do a pregnancy test, but a few days ago I got what I thought was the start of my period, which has of late started with a brown discharge (sorry for all the details but they are necessary) After 3 days of fairly light flow it stopped, but then 2days later I started a very heavy flow that smelt bad like infection and initially had a large clot in it. I dont know what to think, can anyone advise me or tell me if this is what happens when the menopause starts?? thanks for any replies in advance.

It could be related to perimenopause.  You can also take a sensitive pregnancy test, if it was a miscarriage, there is a possibility you still have a little hCG in your system that the test will pick up.  No possibility of a lost tampon, is there?  They can cause a smell.
