Is D&C necessary?

I turned 50 in Dec. Up until Jan I had normal regular periods. In Feb. I had a period with heavy bleeding and it didn't stop for 3 weeks. Dr. finally prescribed Progesterone to stop the bleeding. I had an ultra sound yesterday and there are no polyps or fibroids but my uterine lining is thick. Dr. is advising D&C. Do you think it's an overkill? I feel like with my normal history I can wait and see if it's just hormonal imbalance.

My friend had a thinning of her lining due to excessive bleeding. It really didn't help her and she ended up with a hysterectomy. But I do think it is commonly given. Ablation or D and C though?
