What could have caused my periods to start back after 7 yrs ?

I am 46 years old and haven't had a period in approx 7 years.  Doctors put me on hormones for a few months to regulate me but after the cycle of meds stopped so did my periods. But 3 days ago, I received a period again.

Periods can stop and start up for a number of reasons. Did you have any other diagnosed medical problems or treatments or even traumatic events around the time your periods stopped?

Undiagnosed problems are another cause such as an underlying thyroid abnormality such as hypothyroidism that is more common than diagnosed.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is another cause of missed periods although I think 7 years would be excessive for PCOS.

Being that you were only ~39 when your periods stopped would make me think it wasn't really menopause. However, you may want to see a doctor to make sure there's nothing concerning going on. You may want to have an endocrine (including thyroid) workup too.

Let us know what you find out.

It might not be a period, it might be abnormal bleeding.  You'd better get it checked out in case it's cancer.
