AST and ALT are enzymes produced in the liver. Elevated levels indicate some damage or inflammation. This can be caused by alcohol intake, fatty foods, many different drugs, and of course various liver disorders. In acute liver disease, the numbers can get very high, much  higher than this. Your doctor should tell you why he ordered the test and what he wants to do to improve it. The liver is very resilient and generally recovers quickly when you stop whatever is irritating it.

You might have better luck posting this question in the liver disorders forum. However, I've read that very high AST and ALT levels are usually associated with acute hepatitis. Has his doctor given you an ideas as to what might be going on?
