Prostatitis symptoms

We get a lot of questions from men who might have prostatitis, so we thought this might help in seeing what other men experience.

Here are some comments from men who've had prostatitis:

"Comment from: ken, 55-64 Male (Patient) Published: January 29

I have been suffering with chronic prostatitis for around 8 years. I have been treated with Cipro and tamsulosin. The symptoms recede after treatment and return more aggressively. Now they are worse and at night I have the urge to empty my bladder up to 4 times. The pain on the tip of the penis and near the anus area is more intense; during the day the flow gets better but the pain is still there, towards the evening things start going downhill. Maybe surgery is the only option."

Please be very specific in describing your symptoms to your caregiver. I was just seen for prostatitis and it was a toss-up there between an STD, UTI, sports Injury, tight pants, you get the picture. Be clear and concise in your detailed description. The frequent urination, the dribbles, the strong urge, and don't forget the odor as well. The pain in the right testicle, the tip of the penis, pain and discomfort while urinating, and the lower back/flank soreness is vital. Be ready for a digital exam, urine sample, and be positive."

I have had on and off bouts with prostatitis, antibiotics usually make no difference. During bouts my PSA is always perfect, DRE usually normal and urine tests show no infection. However, symptoms of prostatitis are all there, even getting pain in one or both testicles and burning in the urethra. During episodes I must reduce caffeine and alcohol to near zero. Saw palmetto, ibuprofen, cold pack under the scrotum and not sitting on a hard chair all help. Regular ejaculation seriously helps and makes me appreciate my wife even more."
