on methadone for about 10 months

Hello, i am new here and have been on methadone for about 10 months at 68mgs A day.
My question is to anyone who is tapering at 2mgs a day.....are the w/ds bad while tapering or just when coming of cold turkey? I want to start tapering but am just scared i have a family to care for and i want to be able to function but also get off of it. Evrything i have read says it horrible and puts anyone who is on methadone down...but the truth is, it saved my life.,

i've been on methadone for near 3years now.started on 90mg & dropped to 70mg then 50mg, got a bit depressed & buckled under the peer pressure from my significant other & jumped back up to 70mg. i'm in the process of weening back down to 50mg again. arranged it with my A&D Dr. so it only 5mg a fortnight, thats how i did it before & thats how i'll do it again. comfortable, slow & at my own pace. you've got to remember it's going to be different for everyone depending on there circumstance & personal ability. i've kids myself & most of the people i used to know can't understand why i even started taking it in the first place, they're all single of course. it's not all about just how you'll feel, it also has to with your environment & own individual stresses. good luck with whatever & whenever you decide to give it a go. at your own pace...

Hi, I just joined.  I have been on methadone HCL and morphine IR for several years, (chronic pain from bike accident/fractured neck, several surgeries, etc)  ut originally was put on oxycontin and soma!  I quit soma after 2 yrs cold turkey and then the oxy too with the help of great doctor and methadone.  I have tapered methadone down from 14 tabs day (10 mg) to 5/day and the morphine from 6/day (15mg) to 3/day (recently went 2.5 weeks without any morph as it was stolen from my house by friend of my 23 yr old son.  I was never uncomfortable with withdrawal symptoms, but my pain level was tough to deal with, so I rested more, and basically babies myself...the methadone saved me though, it can be a safe drug if used correctly.  Come on,  I think we all know if we really need pain meds or just want the buzz.  I tapered off methadone by 10 mg a month, I am working on going down to 10mg, but want to cut back on the morphine first (again).  I just saw new MD (my regular one is out on medical leave 3 mos) and he added Roboxane  for muscle spasm (told him not to give me Soma or Flexeril) I have not filled scrip yet, but have read it does not work..if not, I don't see any reason to add another med to the mix.  Any opinions on Roboxane?  Thanx!

Methadone was the best pain relief I've had but, after withdrawing from it I would never take it again. The ONLY safe way to do it is to taper a few mg. overtime. Your docor or clinic should be the one to tell you how much. There is definetly nothing wrong with tapering. Many, many drugs work that way. My withdrawal was terrible but, I did it another way. Don't even try cold turkey. It is not worth it and probably will not work. Good luck and God Bless,
