What are Atypical migraines?

I have been diagnosed with Atypical migraine by my neurologist?
Can this type of migraine cause brain damage?
I had an Evoked Potential test and it was determined I have problems with my Central Nervous System.
How can an Evoked Potential test determine Central Nervous System problems when migraine was not present
  during testing?

Thank you for the information. I have been in touch with my Neurologist. He has prescribed Verapamil 180 MG to be taken 1 in the PM. I was also perscribed  81mg asprin a day and zofran for nausea. This is for my Atypical migraines. I am scheduled to see him next week and he wants to know if I have had any improvement with the headaches. I looked up the Verapamil and it is not approved for the use he prescribed it for.

Have you heard this medication used for this purpose?

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!
A migraine attack without the classical symptoms of aura, headache and nausea is classified as atypical migraine. A silent migraine, ocular migraine etc are all examples of atypical migraine. Generally this occurs in response to weather changes, spasm of blood vessels of the brain, insufficient sleep, motion sickness and exposure to bright lights.
“Evoked potentials (EPs) are the CNS electrical events generated by peripheral stimulation of a sensory organ. EPs are used to detect abnormal CNS function that may be clinically undetectable. Evoked potential tests measure how long it takes for stimulation of different nerves to reach the brain and how big the response is. The speed of the impulses along neurons can indicate if there has been damage (like demyelination caused by MS) to the nerves, as the impulses will travel more slowly to the brain.” Refer: http://ms.about.com/od/multiplesclerosis101/a/evoked_pot_utd.htm
Hence evoked potential test helps to diagnose CNS disorders.

Hope this helps. Do discuss this with your doctor. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
