What Triptan Do You Use (Migraine Patients)

A lot of people come onto the forum asking for other people's experiences with migraine medications. This is a poll about what triptan medications the migraine patients on the forum currently use. In the comments section, let us know if you are currently satisfied with your current triptan medication. Feel free to also post a comment explaining what triptans you have tried in the past.

What is the current triptan medication you are using for the acute treatment of migraine headaches?

I currently use Relpax 40 mg tablets.  It works well for me at the moment.

I've tried Imitrex tablets, Zomig tablets and Maxalt ODT (orally disintegrating tablets).  I will never take Imitrex again-50 mg gave me severe palpitations and chest pain; I thought I was going to die.
Zomig and Maxalt both worked well when I took them (not together of course) but then they stopped working:  it was almost like I developed a tolerance to them.  I do remember the Maxalt ODT tasting weird and sometimes it would make my nausea worse.

I use Maxalt 10mg tablets.  I'd never be able to handle the disintegrating tablets due to throwing up.  The Maxalt works wonderful for me and I've been using it for the last 2 years.  I've never had any side effects while using this medication.

I currently use zomig nasal spray. I give it two thumbs up!

In the past I have also used Maxalt (the dissolving kind) and Axert.

I like zomig. The taste of the nasal spray isn't great (okay, it's TERRIBLE), but it works better than the tablets (in my personal experience and also this is true in terms of the chemical interaction of the medication in the various forms as they've found via scientific trials... although, that doesn't mean that some people might find they do get great results from the tablets even if the zomig is absorbed better in terms of a nasal spray... so, if the tablets DO work for you, I'd never suggest switching to the nasal spray just because the nasal spray is "supposed" to work better.)

I liked the maxalt for a while. A lot of my friends use it. It also tastes awful. But, it works really well. It stopped working for me for some reason, I don't know why. Apparently that can happen with migraine meds... they can work really well for years and then randomly stop working. But... when it worked, it worked great.

The axert also worked really well... but I think that it might have been too strong or something. I was on another medication when I was taking it that also had an effect on serotonin and I think that the two medications mixed badly.. as I had a rare adverse reaction (after months of successfully using axert) which the doctors called "serotonin syndrome" (a.k.a. "serotonin storm") ... this isn't something that anyone else should worry about at all unless you're on other drugs that also do stuff to your serotonin AND your pharmacist/doctor warns you that there might be an interaction... in which case you'll already have that warning (your pharmacist/doctor might forget to warn you... so if you are on multiple medications, it is Always a good idea to read the patient prescribing information Yourself so that you are an informed consumer!! all the important warnings will be on the patient prescribing information that comes with your medications). And... it's not something that is specific to axert or anything... it can happen if you mix any of the migraine meds with other medications that do stuff to serotonin... it's just that axert is one of the stronger ones... so, discuss with your doctor which one might be a safer choice... but it might turn out that axert IS the safer choice out of all the options... everyone's physiology is different after-all. But, in my case, I had to stop taking it and switch to zomig. And... I've been happy with fairly happy with zomig since.

I do find that I feel really "hung-over" after using the zomig, but my doctor says that it is probably because all of my migraine symptoms aren't being relieved... and not actually a side-effect of the migraine meds... which is believable because the "hung-over" feeling is a common migraine symptom. I usually end up sleeping all day after using the zomig, even though it often will get rid of or at least lower the head pain.

The only other icky thing about the zomig nasal spray of course is the taste... sometime it will make me gag.. and, if I have to use it too much it will really irritate my nose... sometimes gives me nose bleeds and stuff. Kinda nasty.

BUT! Over-all... two thumbs up!! That much relief from migraine pain... it's great stuff! :)
