has anyone had a hysteroscopy??

So.. anyone who has read my post knows my history.. for people who haven't, i will tell it again as shortly as possible. in the past 2 years i have had three losses. i went into early labor with my first baby at 20 weeks. i was hospitalized and on the second day my contractions started again, my water broke and my son was born. he died 22 minutes later. i miscarried with my second pregnancy at 5 weeks. with my third, the same thing happened as what happened with my son, only my daughter died before delivery.

i have been working with doctors for the past 9 months since my last loss, searching for a cause. i have been tested for all autoimmune diseases (lupus, sjogrens, scleroderma, celiacs.. etc.) Everything is normal. 7 months ago my ANA was positive but it is now negative and my rheumatologist said she is now confident there is not an autoimmune disease that is causing my losses. so, time to look else where.

i had an ultrasound down a few months ago to look at my uterus, ovaries, etc. they said everything looked normal. i have an appointment with my doctor on the 23rd to have my thyroid checked and i was thinking about asking her if it would be a good idea for me to have a hysteroscopy done. i have researched and found that this is sometimes done to determine a cause for pregnancy loss.

has anyone had this done? how was it (painful?) were there any side effects, or risks? also, do you think it is reasonable for me to request this even though i had an ultrasound? i just thought this would be more.. detailed and they would be able to see more.

I am so sad to hear your story, you are a strong woman.  I had one in October of 2008...it was after miscarring twins at 11 weeks, they passed at 6 and 8 weeks. It was a missed miscarriage. Basicallly it was to remove the polyps they found in a salene test (checking uterus for ivf).  What they removed were the umbilici of the twins still attached to the uterine wall. I am so glad they checked because I am not sure if anything else would have attached with them still on there.  Anyway I was in a surgery center and was under complete anestesia, I had strong pills-drugs to recover with and didn't feel any pain!!!  The IV was the worst part and having to constantlly pee trying to wait for the surgery to begin. It was first thing in the morning and I couldn't eat after midnight.  I compare it to getting my wisdom teeth out, I had a good experience with that, no problems, complications or pain!!  Don't stress about it, it will clean up your uterus, possibly scrape away bad or old lining.  The good thing or news is I got pregnant 6 weeks after this procedure!!!  My husband drove me home apparently the nurse dressed me.  I was in stirups that tied my legs up, like ski boots.  I just took it easy that day watching tv in bed.  Then it was the weekend and I was back to work on Monday.  I have a desk job.  Best of luck to you with everything.  With all 4 of my miscarriages I never had a D and C so I don't know how it compares but mine was pain free.

thank you for your reply. i just don't know if they will do it. i think it is worth a try since i have been tested for so many things and found nothing. i just feel like there has to be something going on. i am nervous my doctor will refuse to do it. i have an appointment on thursday the 23rd so hopefully she will agree with me on this one.

I actually just had the procedure done this Wednesday.  I have had 3 consecutive miscarriages and so the doctor and I decided to out rule some obvious causes. My situation started with having a sonohistogram done.  That's where they send a saline solution into the uterus and they perform a transvaginal ultrasound at the same time.  They found 2 polyps in there, which had them schedule me for a hysteroscopy.  The procedure is not bad.  It is very similar to a D+C, you will be put completely under anesthesia.  Nothing to eat/drink/no candy or gum the night before the procedure (hydrate well in advance). The worst part for me was having the IV put in, I have small veins and so it's always painful them poking around.  The medicine they gave me to put me out did send a painful feeling in that arm.  Other than that before I knew it I woke up in the recovery room.  I was a little light headed at first, small/light bleeding.  They tell you to take it easy no strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for at least a week.  They will have you schedule to come in for a 2 week follow up.  No sex until after that time.  Really the procedure just sends the tiniest camera up into the uterus.  They have a small scrapper to remove anything in there like in my case the polyps.  There are no stiches required.  I hope sharing my experience helps you.  Goodluck!

Hi there, I had this done yesterday and it took all of 10 minutes, heres my story, firstly a nurse came and took down documentation of any medication or medical conditions I had, then the Gynaecologist came in and told me that instead of doing the Endometrial Biopsy I was booked in for, he was going to do a hysteroscopy first and if everything looked ok then he wouldnt bother with the biopsy.

I was first asked to undress from the wait down, and then taken through and put on a chair with rests for my legs on it, after which the Dr came in and he firstly gave me a pelvic exam which was not painful, then he injected a local anaesthetic to my cervix which I hardly felt at all, after which he put in the endescope (camera) didnt feel any pain just a little pressure started talking to the nurse which took my mind of what he was doing, only took a minute and then we were done, there was nothing untoward there, so a biopsy was not needed.

This post is to let all women who are going to have this procedure, please believe me when I tell you it is nothing to lose sleep over, (although I was extremely anxious) and it over very quickly, do not read all the horror stories on the net as I did and wished that I didnt procedure was painless from beginning to end.

Regards
Daltor

Hi!
Thank you for sharing your experience!  I am having the procedure ths coming Friday.  I've been told that the doc will do a "local" and that then I won't feel much pain.  However, I am terrified of the idea of shots in that area.  I am glad you said that it did not hurt badly.  Thanks!
