Leg pain at night

My son gets terrible shocks in his legs at night (during day too but really bad at night).  He says sometimes they are quick but sometimes they are lasting for several minutes.  I know he is having a lot of trouble sleeping.  He says he just gets to sleep and the pains start over.  Any suggestions or tricks to help these?  He takes Neurotin 1200mg-1600mg/day.  He does take lots of showers per day but he can't hardly stand the heat but he says it gives him something else to feel other than the pain.  I wonder if the heat is not the best or should I just let him do what gives him some relief for a few minutes.  I think the lack of solid sleep (he's 12 yr old) does effect his concentration even more than usual.  Thanks.

I think you may be right.  I know he doesn't like to be hot.  I never really thought about him really trying to just off-set the pain and music may be the answer.  I will bring this up to the dr.  I have seen this symptom get worse over the last month or so.  I think the shower just kinda covers it up for a bit or maybe is relaxing but when he gets out it is worse.  Will give it a try.  Thank you.  Hope you are still dreaming about the concert!

If he has MS the hot showers may not be good. Heat makes MS symptoms worse by raising body temperature which set off the nerves more. You may have to bring it up with a Doctor and they may try something else besides Neurotin or the Neurotin may be the best choice. He may need a pain Doctor who specializes in children since thsy can not take all the medications adults can. It is all very complicated and for each of us it takes awhile to get the right combination of drugs and when best to take them. I have to take several anti seizures and a muscle relaxant. Even with that I do not get 100% relief. I have been working on the right combination for years. I have been told in my case they can't take it away completely. Part of it I have grown used to other things are harder. I use an ipod nano with certain songs to listen to when it gets bad at night.
