Depressed needing answers...

I am a 37 years old & have been experiencing some symptoms that I can’t seem to figure out.  MS continues to come to my mind so I wanted to give you all a run down of what I’m experiencing & see if MS is something I should mention to my dr.
First onset of something odd was noticed about 3 years ago when I would work out at the gym.  When I would try to do anything overhead with weights, my left arm would give out & I literally could not get it to lift the weight... no matter how light it was.  It was so odd to me but I just chalked it up to muscle fatigue & went on.  Fast forward to now... the past year I’ve been having horrible weak spells.  Almost like my blood sugar is bottoming out but it’s not.  (It’s been checked) my legs will feel like jello & I have to sit down bc they literally feel like they are about to give out right under me.  My tongue feels fat & almost numb at times, the right side of my face feels the same.  My right eye waters often.  My right arm also feels heavy.  I have a pain that comes & goes in the bottom of my right foot.  I feel dizzy & off balance.  Sometimes I can’t find the right words for things & my speech comes out slurred like I’ve had a stroke or something.  I stay exhausted all the time & cant seem to get enough sleep.  I also have random muscle spasms all over my body.
Can someone tell me if I need to look into MS?

Hi and welcome,

The most common kind of injury to the rotator cuff at the gym is something called rotator cuff tendinitis, an inflammation or swelling of the tendons connecting your muscles and bones in your shoulder, a more severe injury would be a rotator cuff tear which is very painful, these types of injuries don't necessarily have anything to do with the gym though, last year we had 3 generations of women in our family all with rototor cuff tears happening with weeks of each other and all were from lifting too heavy a weight in everyday normal life  situations.....

Imbalance in shoulder muscles is not uncommon or necessarily injury related, it's common to be weaker in your non dominant arm, specific stretching and strengthening exercises can correct the imbalance....what you've described with your left arm isn't suggestive of a neurological condition like MS or there being something less common going on and its more likely unrelated to what's been happening more recently down the right side of your body.

What your describing in the last year that is 'only' happening unilaterally, as in the right side of your body eg "right side of my face feels (fat and numb)....My right eye waters often...right arm also feels heavy...pain that comes & goes in the bottom of my right foot" everything apart from the watering right eye 'maybe' suggestive of a neurological causation, not necessarily MS though, and it would depend on if the issues were the perception of vs measurable clinical abnormality but it would be worth getting a neurological assessment because 'unilateral' clinical signs of neurological abnormality will help rule in or out many potential causation's.

The rest is bilateral, global or all over, as in not isolated to one side only eg "my legs will feel like jello & I have to sit down bc they literally feel like they are about to give out right under me....My tongue feels fat & almost numb at times.....I feel dizzy & off balance......Sometimes I can’t find the right words for things & my speech comes out slurred.....I stay exhausted all the time & cant seem to get enough sleep.....I also have random muscle spasms all over my body."

These types of issues are commonly associated with many different types of medical conditions, some serious but most are not, they 'maybe' interconnected to a neurological causation, which again might not be something like MS, and part and parcel of the bigger picture.....i would recommend you consider getting a sleep assessment done, sleep deprivation from something like sleep apnea, depression-anxiety etc could be happening.

IF all your tests have been perfectly normal so there isn't a viral, vitamin deficientcy, hormonal, pre diabetes, diabetes, hypoglycemia, migraine etc etc medical explanation, it would probably be in your best interest to speak to your dr and ask... what types of medical condition cause these specific issues, and what tests or specialists would he/she recommend for you, so these possible medical conditions can be rule in or out and get you closer to understanding what it is your dealing with?

I hope this helps a little........JJ

Thanks for your reply!  My dad is a diabetic & when I was having a “spell” the other day I checked my blood sugar.  It was in normal range (94).  So, I really don’t think it’s sugar related.  I do suffer from anxiety & it has crossed my mind many times if that’s all it is.  But, it’s hard to think that anxiety can make you feel SO bad & SO scary.  Thanks again for your input!
