Eosinophils Question

I am not sure that this is the right place to pose this question, but was wondering if anyone can shed some light on the eosinophils blood test. My recent results showed 4.1 x 10(9)/L absolute value. I had the test performed at Mayo, and their normal range is 0.05 - 5.0 but I am seeing many other places where 3.5 is the top end of normal.

My neurologist did not mention this test result, so I imagine it is nothing to be concerned about. Can someone help me to understand how important this test may be, especially in light of elevated ACE results (68) and CRP (9.2) at the same time?

The other WBCs seem normal
Lymphocytes: 2.23 (0.9-2.9)
Neutrophils: 5.44 (1.7-7.0)
Basophils: 0.03 (0-0.3)

I'm just wondering if I should bring this up next time I talk to my neurologist, or if this all falls under the category of "no big deal." Generally speaking, I felt pretty healthy on the day I had my blood drawn.

Thanks for your opinion (feel free to recommend another place to pose the question!).

Hi Kyle,

Thank you for your reply. MS is a potential that we are looking to rule out/in. I hve had so many blood tests, with the only 2 abnormal values being my ACE and CRP. MRI/MRV of the head w and wo contrast are normal. My spine MRI shows a non-enhancing T2 signal at C3 without mass effect "most consistent with demyelinating disease" and a more subtle signal at C4-5 (also non-enhancing).

I am waiting to hear the results of both Somatosensory EP and Brainstem/Auditory EP tests - the doc did not order VEP. I'm also waiting on MuSK blood work as my primary issue has been a reoccurrence of diplopia from 6th CN palsy (6 years a part!). My first Myasthnia Gravis test came back negative.

I have declined the LP for now. If indeed this is MS, there will be more symptoms to chase after. I am exhausted from the testing and feel like the docs all look at my like I'm off my rocker because most of my severe symptoms have cleared up. I guess I'm trying to make sense of how I feel and keep wondering if there is something obvious that the docs have missed. Wishful thinking, I guess.

Hi cjtmn - Welcome to the group.

Was this blood test done in conjunction with a search for answers about possible MS? If so isolating a single blood level is not usually too informative.

The search for MS answers typically includes a whole battery of tests including blood tests to rule out mimics like Lyme, MRI's of head and spine done with and without contrast, lumbar punctures, evoked potential tests and nerve conduction studies......

The most important part of an MS diagnosis is the clinical exam.

Are you on this journey?

Kyle

Eosinophils can be elevated due to allergies.  I am a laboratory professional and have performed blood counts for 10 years.  I would not worry about that result, but feel free to ask your doctor about it, they can correlate it with your symptoms and other results. :)
